(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nemone\/427438461\/in\/photolist-DLJyD-kosma-sYobT-DLJbW-4Rxram-4RteYg-4RteWX-4RxqZC-DLHZe-7zv6BE-DLHTW-DLJsy-e4TX5Z-DLJnJ\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nemone\/\">nemone\/Flickr<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/2.0\/\"> CC BY-NC 2.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BERLIN \u2014\u00a0The eastern German city of Dessau marked the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus school of design Sunday with the opening of a new museum featuring a collection of exhibits and objects that tie in with the movement&#8217;s iconic buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Angela Merkel told a crowd at the opening of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau the school featured an avant-garde style that &#8220;we still really enjoy today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The city was the school&#8217;s second home after it moved from Weimar, and the new museum building was designed by Barcelona&#8217;s addenda architects to interface with the city and nature.<\/p>\n<p>Described as a &#8220;soaring concrete block enveloped in glass&#8221;\u00a0in the heart of Dessau, &#8220;depending on the light, the surroundings are reflected more or less strongly in the glass facade or enable views through the building,&#8221;\u00a0the museum said.<\/p>\n<p>The opening exhibition tells the story of the famous school in Dessau, featuring more than 1,000 exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than focusing on iconic designs and masters, the museum said the emphasis instead is the school and the students: &#8220;the daily reality of learning and teaching between the poles of creative design and industrial prototype production, artistic experiment and economic pressure, educational institution and emancipatory aspiration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bauhaus was founded in Weimar in 1919 under architect Walter Gropius as Germany grappled with its political future after World War I.<\/p>\n<p>Weimar opened its own new museum earlier this year, showcasing many of the school&#8217;s items that blurred the lines between the artistic and the industrial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Bauhaus not only tradesmen and artists worked closely together, but also many women put a strong stamp on Bauhaus style,&#8221;\u00a0Merkel noted in her weekly video podcast this week.<\/p>\n<p>Once the Bauhaus school fell afoul of right-leaning local authorities in Weimar, who had long been suspicious of its unconventional students and teachers, its funding was slashed in 1925.<\/p>\n<p>That forced it to move northeast to Dessau, where the iconic glass-fronted Bauhaus headquarters and a residential estate with 90 apartments were built.<\/p>\n<p>Dessau&#8217;s Nazi-dominated council forced the Bauhaus to close in 1932, and an attempt to keep it going in Berlin lasted only a few months.<\/p>\n<p>Bauhaus buildings in Dessau, Weimar and also Bernau have been designated UNESCO world heritage sites.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2014\u00a0The eastern German city of Dessau marked the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus school of design Sunday with the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":230052,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,79],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-230047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-art-and-culture","category-travel","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/230047","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=230047"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/230047\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":230066,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/230047\/revisions\/230066"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/230052"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=230047"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=230047"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=230047"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
