However when we take a closer look, we find that an unprecedented storm could hit the industry very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report recommends implementing a pan-Canadian strategy to better co-ordinate industry efforts. \u201cIn short, it is time we take the destiny of our aerospace industry in hand,\u201d the study states.<\/p>\n<p>The report \u2014 titled \u201cPropelling Quebec to new heights for a renewed commitment to aerospace\u201d \u2014 points to a looming labour shortage. The problem could be aggravated by Quebecers&#8217; \u201cbad perception\u201d of the aerospace sector and \u201cprejudices\u201d toward the trades, according to the IAMAW.<\/p>\n<p>The study comes amid concerns over Bombardier&#8217;s recent departure from commercial aviation after three decades in the sector and global aircraft production moving toward a duopoly dominated by Boeing and Airbus.<\/p>\n<p>The Montreal-based plane-and-train maker announced the sale of its struggling regional jet program to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for US$550 million in June and concluded the sale of its Q400 turboprop business to an affiliate of Longview Aviation Capital Corp. for about $250 million in net proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>The same month, an industry report cautioned that Canadian aerospace is \u201cat risk\u201d of being overtaken by foreign rivals if Ottawa doesn&#8217;t treat it as an \u201curgent priority\u201d and work with the sector to buttress falling employment and GDP contributions.<\/p>\n<p>New funding commitments, Canada-first defence procurement and fresh talent amid \u201ca massive labour crunch\u201d are key to staunching the decline, according to the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) report, authored by former Quebec premier Jean Charest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a heck of a lot more people in the industry,\u201d Charest told The Canadian Press in June. \u201cWe are clearly trying to influence the leaders of the next federal election campaign. We make no bones about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Chartrand, head of the machinist union&#8217;s Quebec chapter, echoed Charest&#8217;s concerns this week, saying that other parts of the world are growing their aerospace sectors through \u201cconcrete action\u201d while Canada lacks a comprehensive plan that co-ordinates regional efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Chartrand added that a pan-Canadian strategy must help Quebec \u2014 which houses half of the Canadian aerospace sector \u2014 reinforce one of its \u201cmost important economic pillars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March, a study by the Canadian Aviation and Aerospace Council found that employees in that field are generally older than the average Canadian worker.<\/p>\n<p>About one-third of Canada&#8217;s aerospace workforce will retire within five years, resulting in a need for 55,000 new workers by 2025, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we cannot fill these positions at a time when the industry is growing, we risk seeing companies forced to review their level of activity on Canadian soil for lack of available labour,\u201d warns the IAMAW.<\/p>\n<p>The study proposes better co-ordination between educational institutions and business needs as well as mentoring programs to ensure transfer of knowledge between generations.<\/p>\n<p>For workers who are already in the labour market of a rapidly changing field, the paper suggests fostering a \u201cculture of continuous training\u201d to prevent workers from being left behind amid layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, aerospace employment and GDP contributions in Canada have declined five per cent and four per cent, respectively, according to the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.<\/p>\n<p>The industry furnished 213,200 jobs last year and injected $25.5 billion into the economy, but will need 50,000 more workers within the next few years, the Charest report stated, stressing the need for talent.<\/p>\n<p>It called for a national system to co-ordinate co-op placements, fast-track immigration for skilled aerospace workers and partner with stakeholders to create national training centres.<\/p>\n<p>The industry report also recommended launching a \u201cnational defence industrial strategy\u201d and overhauling the procurement process to open it up to small business and industry giants alike.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aerospace workers are sounding the alarm over the future of the industry in the run up to the federal election, &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":228190,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-228189","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-catherine-levesque","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/228189","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=228189"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/228189\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":228191,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/228189\/revisions\/228191"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/228190"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=228189"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=228189"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=228189"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
