June 2012 Satelite Dishes by Leslie Spit &#8211; Can You Hear Me Now?, CC BY 2.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OTTAWA \u2014 The federal government is making a big funding announcement Wednesday alongside a Canadian company that&#8217;s developing satellite technology to expand high-speed Internet access in rural and remote regions.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Ottawa-based Telesat will join Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains for an event that appears to be part of the government&#8217;s commitment to invest $100 million over five years into a technology known as low-Earth-orbit satellites.<\/p>\n<p>In its spring budget, the Liberal government said low-Earth-orbit satellite capacity would be part of its $1.7-billion vow to help rural and remote areas gain access to reliable, high-speed Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Telesat has been developing a satellite constellation \u2014 a group of co-ordinated satellites it says will provide high-speed connectivity in rural and remote communities around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Company CEO Dan Goldberg will hold a news conference with Bains at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum following the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>On its website, Telesat says its state-of-the-art satellite constellation will involve launching highly advanced satellites into low Earth orbit, which is about 1,000 km from the surface of the planet \u2014 much closer than traditional satellites.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites will \u201cseamlessly integrate with terrestrial networks,\u201d the company says.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the federal government earmarked between $5 billion and $6 billion in new investments over the next decade for a plan to make sure 95 per cent of Canadian homes and businesses will have access to high-speed Internet by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>It also set a target of 100-per-cent connectivity throughout the country by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the development of low-orbit satellite technology, the government plan also includes investments aimed at encouraging more private-sector spending on rural high-speed Internet and better co-ordination among provinces and territories.<\/p>\n<p>The budget also announced the federal infrastructure bank would seek to invest $1 billion over the next decade as a way to attract $2 billion in additional private investments towards expanding connectivity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA \u2014 The federal government is making a big funding announcement Wednesday alongside a Canadian company that&#8217;s developing satellite technology &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":224128,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-224127","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-andy-blatchford","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224127","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=224127"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224127\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":224129,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224127\/revisions\/224129"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/224128"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=224127"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=224127"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=224127"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
