MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— President Rodrigo Duterte said that although the Philippines will continue to assert sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea, it may also give China \u201cfishing rights\u201d.<\/p>\n

Duterte made this remark as he defended anew his October 2016 deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping to allow Chinese fishermen within Philippine waters as long as China will allow Filipinos to fish in the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal.<\/p>\n

\u201cSabi nila, \u2019Bakit mo pinayagan ang<\/em>\u00a0China?\u2019\u00a0Sabi ko<\/em>\u00a0(They say, \u2018Why did you allow China?\u2019 I said), \u2018As far as I’m concerned, I’m the owner, and I’m just giving the fishing rights,\u2019\u201d Duterte said in a TV interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy early Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

He said Filipino fishermen would be at the losing end if he will prevent Chinese from fishing within the Philippines\u2019 exclusive economic zone (EEZ).<\/p>\n

\u201cKasi tayo ang kawawa ngayon eh kung hindi tayo magpasok doon<\/em>\u00a0(Because we will be at the losing end if we don\u2019t allow them there) invoking fishing — traditional fishing rights, we cannot fish there. That is how constricted these guys are,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Duterte stressed anew that the Philippines was no match against the Asian superpower and wondered why his critics and detractors wanted to impeach him for simply protecting Filipinos from possible armed conflict.<\/p>\n

While the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruled in favor of the Philippines\u2019 arbitration case filed against China, Duterte said he also had to consider China\u2019s claim over the disputed waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s called fishing rights, that they have been fishing there for centuries for their food,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they claim that it is theirs, so they will be the one to give us the fishing rights,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

As much as he wanted to, Duterte said he could not simply drive China away from territories they claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo sabi nila<\/em>\u00a0(They say), \u2018Duterte, you must protect our marine resources and people fishing there. You must drive them out,\u2019” the President said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlam naman talaga na<\/em>\u00a0it’s impossible\u00a0kay sabihin man ng<\/em>\u00a0China (They really know that it\u2019s impossible because China will say), \u2018Who are you to tell us to get out there? This is our ocean.\u2019 That’s why it’s named China Sea. It’s not named Philippine Sea,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Duterte, meanwhile, blamed the administration under President Benigno Aquino III for losing ownership of the Panatag Shoal which is within the Philippines\u2019 200-nautical mile EEZ.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
