MANILA — Iceland may have been fed with wrong information, which convinced its government to sponsor a resolution before the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and seek a probe into the Philippines\u2019 human rights situation, in relation to the government\u2019s campaign against illegal drugs.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said he and President Rodrigo Duterte are both wondering why Iceland is making that anti-drug war posturing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Duterte) can\u2019t even understand why Iceland is making that posturing. He has been\u2014that Iceland has been doing that I think twice, last year,\u201d Panelo said in a Palace briefing on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil now, he is in wonderment why Iceland is doing that. He can only speculate\u2026 or the two of us can only speculate that maybe some activists either from this country or elsewhere are feeding Iceland with the wrong information,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Panelo did not elaborate which activists he was referring to but criticized Iceland for being \u201cnaive to accept everything that it hears or receives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, Philippine National Police (PNP)chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde raised the possibility that the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People\u2019s Army (NPA), may have played a role in the UNHRC\u2019s adoption of the Iceland-led resolution.<\/p>\n

Panelo agreed that it may be part of the CPP-NPA\u2019s program but noted that the government will not bother investigating whether there is truth to the group\u2019s involvement in the UNHRC resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlam mo kone-konektado iyon. Alam mo ngayon ang mga<\/em>\u00a0organization,\u00a0maraming<\/em>\u00a0links eh (You know, they\u2019re all connected. You know, organizations now have many links). So, maybe that\u2019s part of their program,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPinapabayaan na nga namin, \u2018di ba? Hayaan mo na sila<\/em>\u00a0(We\u2019re just letting them do what they want, right. We will just ignore them), we\u2019ll just do our best,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

No impact on trade, investments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Panelo downplayed the impact brought by Duterte\u2019s consideration to cut diplomatic ties with Iceland, noting that it would not have an impact on their trade relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been having trade relations with other countries so I don\u2019t think cutting a relationship with one country would affect us,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

He also does not see any effect of the cutting of ties between two countries on the development of the geothermal power project in Biliran, Leyte, where Iceland\u2019s Orka Energy is a part of.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think even if you cut ties with a particular country, if it benefits that country to be entering into a commercial agreement with one who cuts its ties, I don\u2019t think they will sever that relationship. It\u2019s only the diplomatic relations,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo also said he does not see the deportation of the 2,000 Filipinos working in Iceland because of the threat to cut ties.<\/p>\n

While Panelo earlier confirmed that Duterte is \u201cseriously considering\u201d cutting ties with Iceland, he said that nothing is final yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said the words of the President is, \u2018I\u2019m seriously considering cutting ties with Iceland.\u2019 In other words, he\u2019s mulling over it. So, let\u2019s see how it develops,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Chief architect<\/strong><\/p>\n

Panelo,meanwhile, clarified that there was no contradiction as far as Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.\u2019s tweet that the Philippines is \u201cnot\u201d severing diplomatic ties with any country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng sinasabi niya<\/em>\u00a0(He said), \u2018we are not severing\u2026,\u2019\u00a0eh wala pa naman eh,<\/em>\u00a0mulling over\u00a0pa nga eh<\/em>\u00a0(nothing has happened yet, it\u2019s still being mulled over),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo said Locsin or any Cabinet member\u2019s words are always subject to change based on pronouncements made by the President.<\/p>\n

\u201cMembers of the Cabinets words can never be final. They are all subject to change without prior notice by the Chief Architect and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. In other words, he is the President,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
