(Pixabay Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Government of Ontario has revealed its plans for nominating Express Entry candidates with work experience in the technology sector for Canadian permanent residence.\u00a0<span id=\"more-12503\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ontario had previously announced that it would create a dedicated stream for tech workers. Instead, it will hold targeted draws for Express Entry candidates with work experience in six tech-related occupations through its existing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ontario-express-entry-human-capital-priorities-stream.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Capital Priorities Stream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Express Entry system<\/a>\u00a0is Canada\u2019s main source of skilled workers and manages the pool of candidates for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/federal-skilled-worker-program-fswp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Skilled Worker Class<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canada-federal-skilled-trades-program-fstc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Skilled Trades Class<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-experience-class.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Experience Class<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible candidates for these programs are entered into the Express Entry pool where they are ranked based on scores awarded under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/comprehensive-ranking-system.html?_ga=2.23123261.625225029.1562082626-806715713.1510089659\">Comprehensive Ranking System<\/a>\u00a0(CRS).<\/p>\n<p>A candidate\u2019s CRS score is based on factors that include age, education, skilled work experience and proficiency in English or French.<\/p>\n<p>Express Entry candidates with a provincial nomination receive an additional 600 points toward their CRS score, effectively guaranteeing an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residence, or ITA.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario is the most popular destination for new permanent residents of Canada, including those admitted through the Express Entry system. In 2018, 65% of new immigrants admitted through Express Entry had Ontario as their destination province.<\/p>\n<p>To be considered for an invitation through an OINP tech draw, candidates must first create an Express Entry profile.<\/p>\n<h3>Tech draws will reflect employer needs<\/h3>\n<p>Interest in the tech-focused draws is high in Ontario, which is home to major tech hubs located in the cities of Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario is currently facing a shortage of tech workers, as is the rest of Canada. It is estimated that up to 220,000 skilled workers will be needed in Canada\u2019s Information and Communication Technology sector by 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The OINP uses its Human Capital Priorities Stream to search the Express Entry pool for candidates who match specified federal and provincial criteria.<\/p>\n<p>OINP tech draws will search the Express Entry pool for eligible candidates with work experience in one of six targeted occupations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Software engineers and designers (NOC\u00a02173)<\/li>\n<li>Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)<\/li>\n<li>Computer engineers (NOC 2147)<\/li>\n<li>Web designers and developers (NOC\u00a02175)<\/li>\n<li>Database analysts and data administrators (NOC\u00a02172)<\/li>\n<li>Computer and information systems managers (NOC\u00a00213)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOC stands for National Occupational Classification, which determines an occupation\u2019s skill level and skill type.<\/p>\n<p>The OINP said the six occupations reflect current needs in Ontario and were selected based on consultations with employers and other stakeholders across the province.<\/p>\n<p>The Human Capital Priorities Stream does not require a\u00a0 job offer and has a history of inviting Express Entry candidates with CRS scores that haven\u2019t been high enough for an ITA in one of the federal government\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-invitations-to-apply-issued.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regular Express Entry draws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Express Entry candidates selected by the OINP will receive a Notification of Interest from the OINP and have 45 days to apply for a provincial nomination from Ontario.<\/p>\n<h3>Nominations on the rise<\/h3>\n<p>Ontario receives an annual nomination allocation through the federal government\u2019s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
