MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday shrugged off the United Nations Human Rights Council\u2019s (UNHRC) move to adopt a resolution that would allow the body to investigate the human rights situation in the Philippines.<\/p>\n

\u201cBahala sila. Kung ako magtrabaho hindi ako<\/em>\u2026 (It\u2019s up to them. If I work, I won\u2019t\u2026) Let\u2019s face it. But they — they can,\u201d Duterte told reporters in a chance interview in Malaca\u00f1ang.<\/p>\n

Reports showed that 18 of the 47 member states voted in favor of the draft resolution filed by Iceland which asked UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to prepare a \u201ccomprehensive written report\u201d on the country\u2019s human rights situation.<\/p>\n

Asked if the UNHRC will be allowed to investigate in the country, Duterte said that they should first state their purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet them state their purpose and I will,” Duterte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDagdag lang sila sa intriga<\/em>\u00a0(They\u2019ll only add to the intrigue). They better go to the media and the media will tell them the truth.\u00a0Eh ipalabas ninyo \u2018yung<\/em>\u00a0footages\u00a0ninyong lahat<\/em>\u00a0(show all your footages) and all, and that will clear everybody,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo earlier called any form of UN investigation as an interference to Philippine sovereignty.<\/p>\n

In a tweet, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said the draft resolution will most likely be ignored.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo effect. Such resolutions especially those passed by a tiny minority can and will be ignored. No consequences. On the other hand, the initiative to insult the Philippines with the assumption without proof that it commits gross abuses there will be far reaching consequences,\u201d Locsin said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson, Col. Bernard Banac said the UN action will be appropriately addressed by the Department of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

He added the PNP will remain guided by instructions from higher authorities.<\/p>\n
