MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Malaca\u00f1ang on Tuesday said that top military officials may have warned President Rodrigo Duterte about a possible coup.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made this remark a day after Duterte bared that the military was getting restive over problems, particularly, corruption within government.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould be,\u00a0dahil<\/em>\u00a0otherwise\u00a0hindi sila nagsasalita ng ganoon eh. Meron siguro siyang<\/em>\u00a0info, very reliable (because otherwise he wouldn\u2019t talk like that. Perhaps he has very reliable info),\u201d Panelo said in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n

Panelo said that Duterte believes that the military could stage a coup if widespread corruption is unsolved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a fair warning to all\u00a0na baka pag nagalit iyan, biglang mag-<\/em>coup\u00a0iyang mga iyan<\/em>\u00a0(that if the military gets angry, they\u2019re going to stage a coup),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

He said the military was very much aware of corruption within the government and may now be reacting to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng<\/em>\u00a0premise\u00a0noon<\/em>\u00a0(The premise there is), under the Constitution the AFP is the protector of the people. So\u00a0kung ang<\/em>\u00a0military\u00a0alam nila na maraming kalokohan, maraming korapsyon<\/em>\u00a0(So if the military knows there\u2019s lots of wrongdoing, lots of corruption),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaya nga ng sinasabi ni Presidente, iyong sa<\/em>\u00a0Manila Water,\u00a0iyong mga kontrata, masyadong<\/em>\u00a0onerous.\u00a0Alam na ng<\/em>\u00a0military\u00a0iyon, so nagre-react sila doon, bakit ganyan<\/em>\u00a0(As the President said, Manila Water, those contracts which are too onerous. The military is aware of all of that, so they are reacting, what is it like that),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Panelo added that Duterte\u2019s call to lawmakers to amend the Constitution is considered part of his solutions to curb corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cSabi niya<\/em>\u00a0(He said), \u2018you better amend the Constitution\u00a0habang nandito pa ako.\u2019 Habang napapakiusapan ko pa iyong<\/em>\u00a0Armed Forces\u00a0na irespeto ninyo<\/em>\u00a0(while I\u2019m still here.\u2019 While I can still ask the Armed Forces to respect you),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must remember that the history has shown us that when the Armed Forces of the Philippines rise and supported by the people,\u00a0eh nababago, nagkakaroon ng<\/em>\u00a0leadership change (there is change, including leadership change),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

On Monday (July 8), Duterte urged the Congress to amend the Constitution to crush corruption.<\/p>\n

“If you want to change the Constitution, do it now.\u00a0Nandiyan pa ako<\/em>\u00a0(While I\u2019m here). And I can tell the military, \u2018No, no, no. You better\u00a0ano\u2026\u2019 Kasi ang military mainit na<\/em>\u00a0(Because the military is restive). And I have told you all the corruption sa gobyerno, ang pinakamalaki nandiyan sa itaas (it\u2019s bigger in the higher office),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
