NEW YORK\u2014Peter Capaldi knew he was in New York on Thursday the minute he stepped out of a classic yellow cab that drove him to the premiere of \u201cDoctor Who.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone just shouted at me from the crowd, \u2018The first Italian Doctor\u201d\u201c he said, laughing.<\/p>\n

Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the Doctor in six decades. At 56, he is also the oldest since the first, William Hartnell.<\/p>\n

Show runner Steven Moffat is not concerned that younger viewers will be turned off by the elder time-and-space travelling Time Lord.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that why Santa Claus never worked as an old man and kids didn\u2019t like him?\u201d he cracked. \u201cLook, I hate to tell you this, but to kids, (previous 31-year-old Doctor) Matt Smith was ancient, right? I mean we\u2019re all ancient to them so (I\u2019m) not remotely (worried.)\u201d<\/p>\n

Moffat also is not dwelling on a recent online leak of scripts for several upcoming episodes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing we can do about it. We were a bit depressed about it, especially me\u2014but what can you do,\u201d he said with a shrug.<\/p>\n

Although the Doctor has changed, his companion has not. Jenna Coleman returns as Clara Oswald, who also was Smith\u2019s sidekick.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re kind of deeply addicted and bound to each other despite how much they annoy each other,\u201d Coleman explained of her character\u2019s relationship to the new Doctor.<\/p>\n

Capaldi added: \u201cI think Clara\u2019s the only person that can tell the Doctor what to do and he\u2019s very bonded to her and has a very deep affection for her, so although she drives him crazy sometimes, he can\u2019t stop inviting her to travel with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctor Who\u201d is a science fiction series in which the Doctor travels in the Tardis, a time machine shaped like an old-fashioned British police telephone booth. The show has remained popular over the years because of its flexibility. The Doctor is able to regenerate into new bodies and transport to any point in space or time.<\/p>\n

Capaldi and Coleman have been on a world tour of seven cities across five continents in 12 days to promote the new season premiering Aug. 23 on BBC America.<\/p>\n
