Paolo Duterte announced Tuesday that he \u201cmight vie\u201d for the position if only \u201cto unite a divided House\u201d amid a tight race for the House leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Presidential son said he had a change of heart because of talks of \u201cterm sharing\u201d being obsessively pushed by Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House is divided, I might be able to help unite it.<em>\u00a0Pareho lang kaming binoto ng mga tao. Kung<\/em>\u00a0term sharing, term sharing\u00a0<em>na kaming lahat<\/em>\u00a0(We were all elected by the people. If it\u2019s term sharing, then everybody should be part of the term-sharing),\u201d the first-term lawmaker said.<\/p>\n<p>In a term-sharing scheme proposed by Duterte, the Speakership should be shared by representatives from Mindanao, Visayas, Luzon, and the party-list groups.<\/p>\n<p>In this scenario, he said members of the said blocs would have to elect their Speaker for their term share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not talking about two persons here. We are talking about our beloved country. It is not about Speakership alone, but who is the right person to unite Congress,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I hope those running for the Speakership stop influencing the Cabinet,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Speakership is being hotly contested by Cayetano, Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and PDP-Laban official candidate Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.<\/p>\n<p>Cayetano has been insisting that Velasco had agreed to a term-sharing scheme for the House Speakership.<\/p>\n<p>However, Velasco denied accepting the proposal, saying term-sharing would only divide the House.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, both Romualdez and Velasco have claimed that they have the support of the majority of House members.<\/p>\n<p>The new Speaker will be elected on July 22, the same day that President Rodrigo Duterte will deliver his Fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; After previously stating that he is not keen on becoming Speaker, Davao City First District Rep.
