NEW YORK\u2014The casts of \u201cAladdin\u201d\u2014both the 1992 film and the current Broadway hit\u2014are honouring Robin Williams, who played the manic, fast-talking, unforgettable Genie.<\/p>\n

Scot Weinger, who played Aladdin in the animated film, said Wednesday that working with his hero was surreal and magical, adding the world has \u201clost a bright light.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weinger described himself as a lifelong Willams fan who had a \u201cMork\u201d doll as a kid and a poster of \u201cDead Poets Society\u201d on his wall as an emerging actor. Working with his hero was surreal and magical, he said.<\/p>\n

Linda Larkin, who voiced Princess Jasmine in the movie, called Williams a \u201cwild, soulful, boundless spirit,\u201d characterizing his Genie character from the movie as \u201cthe best gift ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their reaction came a day after the cast of Broadway\u2019s hit show \u201cAladdin\u201d created their own tribute. James Monroe Iglehart, who won a Tony Award as the Genie, led the crowd at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Tuesday in a rousing version of \u201cFriend Like Me\u201d after the curtain went down. The show\u2019s Playbills had been stuffed with the song\u2019s lyrics and everyone was encouraged to sing along.<\/p>\n

The Broadway community honoured Williams by dimming marquee lights for one minute Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. Eastern.<\/p>\n

Williams, who died of an apparent suicide in his San Francisco Bay Area home this week, had been on Broadway several times, most recently as a restless tiger ghost in 2011 in \u201cBengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
