MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday explained his recent silence on the Reed Bank (Recto Bank) incident, noting that he had to refrain from making statements since he would rather wait for results of the investigation of both the Philippine and Chinese authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a maritime incident. It is best investigated and I will not issue a statement now because there is no investigation and there is no result. Then the only thing that we can do is to wait and give the other party the right to be heard,\u201d Duterte said during the 121st anniversary of the Philippine Navy at the Naval Base Heracleo Alano in Cavite City.<\/p>\n

\u201cImportante \u2018yan e. O China, marami ka mang binigay, ano ba dito ang totoo? Tapos ang nangyari ganito<\/em>, then let us sort\u2026ano ang ma-sort natin diyan<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s important. China, you gave us a lot, what is the truth? Then this is what happened, let us sort, let\u2019s find out a way to sort this out),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Around midnight of June 9, a Chinese vessel allegedly rammed and abandoned an anchored Filipino fishing boat with 22 fishermen on board near the Recto Bank in the disputed West Philippine Sea.<\/p>\n

Duterte appealed not to aggravate the situation in the \u201cmaritime incident\u201d which is only being hyped up by some politicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cYang nangyari diyan sa banggaan<\/em>\u00a0(What happened in that collision), that is a maritime incident.\u00a0\u2018Wag kayong maniwala diyan sa mga politiko na bobo, gusto papuntahin yung<\/em>\u00a0Navy (Don\u2019t believe stupid politicians who want the navy to go there),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not send gray ships there.\u00a0Banggaan lang ng bangka \u2018yan<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s only a collision between two boats). Do not make it worse,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Duterte reiterated that the Philippines could not afford to go to war against China noting that a nuclear war could mean \u201cthe end of everything\u201d.<\/p>\n

He admitted that he wanted \u201caction\u201d over the Recto Bank incident but explained that he has a \u201cduty\u201d to rule as a \u201ccivilized nation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith all\u00a0yung galit<\/em>\u00a0(anger) and one national official even urging sending (to send) the gray ships, warships\u00a0doon sa<\/em>\u00a0(to the) China sea.\u00a0Alam mo gusto ko \u2018yan, kung ako lang gusto ko ng<\/em>\u00a0(You know, I want that, I want) action but I am not in my boyhood age anymore,\u201d said Duterte, who did not identify who he was referring to.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a duty, that is a burden sometimes more than I carry \u2014 I can almost cry,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He said he is not insane enough to build further \u201ctension\u201d between the Philippines and China.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we have to die, we have to die in the correct way and to die with dignity\u00a0hindi \u2018yan basta bangga-banga ka lang diyan<\/em>\u00a0(not just over a collision),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Last week, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. filed a diplomatic protest against China in relation to the alleged abandonment of Filipino fishermen at sea.<\/p>\n

The Chinese embassy in Manila denied the abandonment, saying the Chinese captain tried to rescue the Filipino fishermen \u201cbut was afraid of being besieged by other Filipino fishing boats\u201d.<\/p>\n

Junel Insigne, captain of the F\/B GEM-VIR1 from Occidental Mindoro, reportedly claimed the Chinese vessel stopped for a while and flashed its lights but instead of rescuing them, the vessel left the sinking Filipino fishing boat.<\/p>\n

Insigne said it took two hours before a Vietnamese vessel rescued them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
