(Pixabay Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EDMONTON \u2014 The Alberta Court of Appeal has upheld an extradition order for a man facing terrorism charges in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, 34, has been charged in the U.S. with conspiring to provide and providing material support to terrorists engaged in violent activities in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>He was ordered extradited by Court of Queen&#8217;s Bench Justice John Little in May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Three Appeal Court justices \u2014 Barbara Lea Veldhuis, Jo&#8217;Anne Strekaf and Dawn Pentelechuk \u2014 heard Abdullahi&#8217;s challenge of the extradition order last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Abdullahi raises the same arguments on appeal as raised before the extradition judge,\u201d they wrote in a decision released Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The arguments included \u201cthe deliberately vague\u201d record of the case and a belief that some of the information comes from witnesses who are no longer alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our view, Mr. Abdullahi&#8217;s appeal is grounded in the erroneous suggestion that the evidence &#8230; would not meet the evidentiary standards of a Canadian criminal trial,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThis is not the test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They said the extradition judge was correct to conclude that the evidence was reliable and available for trial.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullahi could still seek leave to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court before he is deported to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer, Akram Attia, could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>American officials allege Abdullahi conspired with Douglas McCain, the first known American who died fighting for the Islamic State, and others in the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullahi, also known as Phish or Fish, was indicted in California in March 2017 and arrested by Canadian authorities in September 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. indictment alleges that Abdullahi conspired with McCain and others to provide personnel and money to people in Syria engaged in terrorist activities, including killing, kidnapping and maiming people.<\/p>\n<p>It also alleges Abdullahi robbed an Edmonton jewelry store to finance the travel of McCain and others, then wired the money.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullahi also faces an armed robbery charge in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EDMONTON \u2014 The Alberta Court of Appeal has upheld an extradition order for a man facing terrorism charges in the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":177008,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-218449","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-colette-derworiz","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/218449","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=218449"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/218449\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":218450,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/218449\/revisions\/218450"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/177008"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=218449"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=218449"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=218449"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
