MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— If his son, Davao City Rep. Paolo \u201cPulong\u201d Duterte, decides to bid for Speaker of the House of Representatives, President Rodrigo Duterte said he will resign.<\/p>\n

Duterte, in a speech in Malaca\u00f1an Palace on Monday, admitted that although he was \u201cneutral\u201d when it comes to who would be the next House Speaker, there were sectors urging Paolo to run.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Sa]<\/em>\u00a0Speakership, neutral\u00a0ako<\/em>\u00a0(I\u2019m neutral). My son Paolo, he\u2019s being rooted to run. I will tell my son publicly now, we would have a talk,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

He reiterated that he never discussed politics with any of his children except the time when he asked his eldest daughter Sara to be his running mate in 2007.<\/p>\n

The President, however, said he would step down once Paolo chooses to seek House Speakership since his winning could mean too many Dutertes occupying top posts.<\/p>\n

\u201cItong si Paolo, sabihin ko sa kanya<\/em>\u00a0(I told Paolo), if you run for speakership, let me know.\u00a0Kasi kung tatakbo ka, magre-resign ako. Kasi marami na tayo<\/em>\u00a0(because if you\u2019re running, I will resign. Because there\u2019s too many of us now),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Sara is currently Davao City mayor while his youngest son, Sebastian, nicknamed \u201cBaste\u201d is vice mayor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen\u00a0\u2018yung kapatid mo mayor tapos<\/em>\u00a0(then your sister is mayor) quite really for someone who\u2019s so uneasy about these things. Though I think it\u2019s a democratic practice,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then again, with the vice mayor,\u00a0anak ko, \u2018yung youngest<\/em>\u00a0son\u00a0ko si Baste and Pulong<\/em>\u00a0as Speaker,\u00a0ako ang Presidente, hindi na maganda tingnan<\/em>\u00a0(my youngest son, Baste and Pulong as Speaker, me as President, it no longer looks good),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Duterte said he has no control over Paolo\u2019s decisions since he is an adult who could make up his own mind.<\/p>\n

He, however, appealed to his son to tell him of his intentions of running for speakership three days before he announces it in public.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does not listen to me. He has his own life to live. Good,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he insists on running,\u00a0maniwala siya sa mga<\/em>\u00a0advisers\u00a0niya<\/em>\u00a0(if he believes his advisers), go ahead. Let me know three days in advance before you make the announcement and I will tender my resignation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Last week, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte will not meddle in the selection of the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

There are three PDP-Laban members seeking to replace former President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, namely Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, and former Speaker and reelected Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, who is seeking to reclaim the House Speakership that he lost in a coup last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
