MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Filipinos should not underestimate the capacity of former Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Ronald \u201cBato\u201d dela Rosa to become a senator, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo defended dela Rosa following criticism hurled at him for his admission, in an interview, that he would need to attend seminars on how to craft laws in the Senate.<\/p>\n

Dela Rosa, who is running under the administration party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino\u2013Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), is expected to win a seat in the Senate with over 18 million votes.<\/p>\n

Panelo said dela Rosa should not be criticized for admitting his handicap as a first-time lawmaker, pointing out that not all lawmakers had to be lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cParang pinalalabas nila dapat abogado lang ang nandiyan kasi<\/em>\u00a0legislation\u00a0iyan<\/em>\u00a0(It\u2019s as if people are saying that only lawyers should be there because being a senator involves legislation),\u201d said Panelo in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n

Panelo said dela Rosa is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) \u201cSinagtala\u201d Class of 1986 and graduates from there are known for their \u201cintellect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHuwag nating maliitin, nakakalimutan ng mga kumukwestyon sa kapasidad ni General Bato na PMA graduate it<\/em>o:\u00a0Hindi ba ang<\/em>\u00a0PMA graduates\u00a0eh<\/em>\u00a0known for their intellect (Let\u2019s not underestimate him, those who are criticizing him are forgetting that General Bato is a PMA graduate: Aren\u2019t PMA graduates known for their intellect)?\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo said like dela Rosa, another former PNP chief and PMA graduate, Panfilo \u201cPing\u201d Lacson himself was not knowledgeable about lawmaking as a rookie senator but eventually improved.<\/p>\n

\u201cNakakalimutan ng mga nagko-question kay General Bato na si Ping Lacson,<\/em>\u00a0PMA graduate at PNP Chief\u00a0din wala ring alam sa<\/em>\u00a0legislation\u00a0noong siya ay pumasok<\/em>\u00a0(Those who are questiniong General Bato are forgetting that Ping Lacson, PMA graduate and PNP chief, also had no knowledge about legislation when he came in),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDi ba naging magaling na<\/em>\u00a0legislator (Didn\u2019t he become a good legislator)?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Dela Rosa attended the Mindanao State University to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree in public administration for three years then transferred to PMA in 1982.<\/p>\n

Aside from being a bemedalled policeman, dela Rosa has a master’s degree in public administration and a doctorate degree in development administration both from the University of Southeastern Philippines.<\/p>\n

Vote-shaming is wrong<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar slammed some sectors making fun of dela Rosa for his answers in the interview, urging them to set politics aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaughing off and casting aspersions on the ability of presumptive Senator Ronald dela Rosa because of a post-election interview is counterproductive,\u201d Andanar said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us take the high road, like the commendable appeals made by Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Risa Hontiveros, and rise above partisan and divisive politics,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Andanar also found vote-shaming among those who do not accept the defeat of their preferred senatorial candidates as \u201cunfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find it unfortunate that some quarters who could not accept the crushing defeat of their senatorial candidates would resort to ad hominem arguments, such as vote shaming, to stress their points,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuestioning or putting doubt on the \u2018intelligence\u2019 of the Classes D and E voters, derisively referred to as \u2018bobotantes\u2019 is simply wrong,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Andanar also enjoined the public to learn from the lessons that that the recent mid-term elections has taught everyone.<\/p>\n

He said winners, should work double time \u201cto bring about the meaningful changes that were promised during the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Political opposition and the Left-leaning partylist groups, he added, should accept their electoral loss and start to re-assess the strategies that did not work.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter all, as President Rodrigo Roa Duterte used to say, we are government workers and we are here to serve the Filipino people. They deserve no less,\u201d Andanar said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
