Rodolfo Fari\u00f1as on Thursday announced that he would be retiring from politics after his term ends in June.<\/p>\n<p>The 67-year-old lawmaker, who filed his withdrawal at the Commission on Elections earlier in the day, said he was not really keen on running for any office in the May 13 mid-term polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not really want to run for any office as I want to retire on June 30 after 39 years since I started as Laoag City Mayor on Mar. 3, 1980, at the age of 28,\u201d Fari\u00f1as said.<\/p>\n<p>Fari\u00f1as said he has been announcing to his constituents that he was not running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Day 1 of the campaign until today, having covered 272 of my district\u2019s 285 barangays, I\u2019ve been announcing in my speeches that I was not running for Governor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he does not even have a single campaign poster, nor is his name included in the sample ballots of his daughter, Ria, who is running for his post as 1st District Representative.<\/p>\n<p>Fari\u00f1as, who served as Ilocos Norte governor before winning a congressional seat, added that he has never even gone to the other districts of the province.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fari\u00f1as said he is already looking forward to his last day in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-eight days\u00a0<em>na lang<\/em>\u00a0(to go), Freedom!\u201d Fari\u00f1as said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by reporters by what he meant by \u201cfreedom,\u201d the veteran politician answered \u201cfree to be doing nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd absolute quality time for my kids and grandchildren! And, myself, of course!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Fari\u00f1as hopes that the incoming governor of Ilocos Norte would do well like he did when he was governor.<\/p>\n<p>In his 10-year tenure as governor from 1988-1998, Fari\u00f1as received various awards and commendations, which included the Most Outstanding Provincial Governor award in 1988 and Most Outstanding Governor Award of the Year 1996.<\/p>\n<p>With his withdrawal from the 2019 gubernatorial race, Ilocos Norte board member Matthew Marcos Manotoc became the sole candidate for governor.<\/p>\n<p>Manotoc, 29, is a son of Ilocos Norte governor and senatorial candidate Imee Marcos, and the grandson of former First Lady and Ilocos Norte 2nd District Rep.
