MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— The government will prioritize the reconstruction of houses and hospitals for the people of Marawi and not business establishments destroyed during the 2017 Marawi siege, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Monday.<\/p>\n

This after President Rodrigo Duterte, last week, said he is not keen on funding the reconstruction of the buildings of rich residents, particularly businessmen, in Marawi City since they have \u201clots of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Marami man ‘yang pera ‘yang mga tao diyan<\/em>\u00a0(Those people have a lot of money). Every Maranao, there is a businessman,\u00a0kasali na ‘yang<\/em>shabu (including shabu).\u00a0May pera sila<\/em>\u00a0(They have money),\u201d Duterte said during a situational briefing in San Fernando City, Pampanga on April 23.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo assured that government has enough funds for the rehabilitation of Marawi but had to prioritize people\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeron naman talagang<\/em>\u00a0funds\u00a0ang<\/em>\u00a0Marawi.\u00a0Pero hindi iyong para sa mga negosyo nila<\/em>\u00a0(We really have funds for Marawi. But it\u2019s not for their businesses),\u201d Panelo said in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng priority siyempre iyong mga tao, sa tao tayo, iyong mga nawalan ng mga bahay doon, iyong mga may sakit doon . Hindi iyong ire-<\/em>rebuild\u00a0natin iyong mga<\/em>\u00a0building\u00a0nilang nasira, hindi iyon siyempre ang<\/em>\u00a0priority (Our priority will be the people, the ones who lost their homes, the ones who are ill. Not the rebuilding of damaged business establishments, of course that won\u2019t be the priority),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Panelo, however, said businessmen, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were still free to loan money from the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cSa ngayon, sila muna. Iyon ang sinasabi ni Presidente.<\/em>\u00a0Later on siguro kung hindi mo kaya, oh di mag-loan ka sa gobyerno<\/em>\u00a0(For now, it\u2019s up to them to spend for reconstruction. That\u2019s what the President said. Later on, perhaps if they can\u2019t afford it anymore, they can loan from the government),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Asked what prompted Duterte to make this declaration, Panelo said the President simply did not want businessmen to expect that government will spend for the reconstruction of their buildings immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cSiguro sinasabi niya lang<\/em>\u00a0priority\u00a0para hindi umasa. Kasi baka naman umaasa sila kaagad na pati gobyerno ay itatayo iyong<\/em>\u00a0building\u00a0nilang nasira<\/em>\u00a0(Perhaps he is saying his priorities so that they don\u2019t keep their hopes up. Because they might be expecting that government will spend for the reconstruction of their damaged buildings),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Duterte commended the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) for building resilient housing units for the victims of Marawi siege in 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I admired most was the speed that you built the houses in Marawi,” Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) chairperson and housing czar, Eduardo del Rosario has repeatedly assured the public that there is “no delay” in the target completion of the rehabilitation of Marawi City.<\/p>\n

He said the government is still “on target” with respect to its timetable for completion of the rebuilding of the war-torn city by December 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
