MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Whether or not PHP10,481 was enough for a family of five to purchase their food and non-food necessities would really depend on their lifestyle, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

This, after the Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) estimate that for the first semester of 2018, a monthly amount of PHP10,481 was enough for a family of five to meet the basic needs was met with criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cDepende siguro eh. Depende sa<\/em>\u00a0lifestyle\u00a0nung kumakain<\/em>\u00a0(It depends. It depends on the lifestyle of those eating),\u201d Panelo said in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cKasi kapag tanungin mo iyon mahirap, sabihin niya, asin lang. Magdidildil kami ng asin, nakakakain na kami<\/em>\u00a0(Because if you ask the poor, they\u2019ll say, they just have salt. As long as they have salt, we can eat),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Panelo, however, acknowledged that this should not be the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cHindi nga, hindi okay siyempre iyon<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s not okay, of course),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo pointed out that the PSA estimate was the result of studies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure\u00a0pinag-aralan nila iyon, \u2018di ba.<\/em>\u00a0I\u2019m sure\u00a0tinanong nila iyong mga<\/em>\u00a0respondents\u00a0sa<\/em>\u00a0survey,\u00a0tapos nakuha nila iyong<\/em>\u00a0average. (I\u2019m sure they studied it. I\u2019m sure they asked respondents in a survey and got the average),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo, meanwhile, refrained from saying whether he felt the PSA estimate was realistic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will leave it to them\u00a0kasi sila ang nag-<\/em>conduct\u00a0ng<\/em>\u00a0survey;\u00a0sila ang nag-aral<\/em>\u00a0(they conducted the survey; they studied it),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMahirap mag-<\/em>guess,\u00a0mag-<\/em>speculate (It\u2019s difficult to guess, to speculate),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Early this month, President Rodrigo R. Duterte has approved a proposal to draft an executive order (EO) creating a task force that seeks to eradicate hunger in the country by 2030.<\/p>\n

The proposed task force will formulate a national food policy to fast-track the government\u2019s campaign to fight hunger, consistent with the 2017-2022 Philippine Development Plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
