(Screenshot from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pcoogov\/\">Presidential Communications (Government of the Philippines)\/Facebook<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pcoogov\/videos\/2499150410113988\/\">video<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Philippine government through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) filed a diplomatic protest against China over the reported 200-plus Chinese vessels present near Pag-asa island.<\/p>\n<p>This was confirmed in a press briefing by Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo on Monday, April 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand [that] we have already issued a diplomatic protest \u2013 [as] per the Western Command \u2013 the DFA has already made the diplomatic protest,\u201d he said, citing the information from the Armed Forces of the Philippines\u2019 (AFP\u2019s) Western Mindanao Command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything that concerns the security of the Philippines will always be a concern,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo said that he has no idea on when the protest was filed by the Foreign Affairs department, but that he will raise this issue to the Chinese Ambassador today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Kasi<\/em> (Because) the mere fact that they&#8217;re there and just stay for a week , <em>bakit, ano ginagawa niyo dun<\/em> (why, what are you doing there?)\u201d he said, then continued, \u201cWe will ask if this is true as far as they&#8217;re concerned and number two, if it is true, what are they doing there? Number three, we will politely ask them not to do what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the briefing, the spokesperson also called out the report of a television station, stating that the vessels were over 600.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reporter made an exaggerated report by distorting the total number of Chinese fishing vessels monitoring in Pag-asa Island. She also used alarming statement such as Chinese vessels have been encircling Pagasa Island, which was never mentioned in the briefing presentation,\u201d Panelo read from a conversation with Western Mindanao Command\u2019s Vice Admiral Rene Medina, as forwarded to him by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo further explained that the 617 figure reported, was only 275, and that the vessels were not \u201cencircling\u201d but were on \u201cstandby\u201d as per the information by AFP\u2019s Western command.<\/p>\n<p>He then said that the this total was observed from the first quarter of 2019 \u2013 from January to March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BFAR\u2019s statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) issued a statement, advising Filipino fishermen to \u2018stay away\u2019 from Panatag shoal for the meantime.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2019\/03\/30\/bfar-tells-pinoy-fishermen-to-stay-away-from-panatag-shoal-for-the-meantime\/\">READ: BFAR tells Pinoy fishermen to stay away from Panatag shoal \u2018for the meantime\u2019<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRefrain <em>muna natin na pumunta doon<\/em> (Refrain from going there), for the meantime, and concentrate on our municipal waters <em>kasi \u2018yun nga ang pinangingisdaan natin<\/em> (because those are our fishing ground),\u201d BFAR National Director Eduardo Gongona told Super Radyo dzBB.<\/p>\n<p>Asked for Malaca\u00f1ang\u2019s side, Panelo said, \u201c<em>Eh \u2018di kung \u2018yan ang<\/em> feeling <em>nila eh, siguro wala naming masamang sundin natin<\/em> (If that is what they feel, maybe there is nothing wrong to follow).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson admitted that he has not received a report on BFAR\u2019s statement but he will verify the details with the bureau.<\/p>\n<p>For the Palace\u2019s part, it advised the Filipino fishermen to continue \u201c<em>kung ano ang dati nilang ginagawa. Kung dati naman nilang ginagawa at wala naming nang-iistorbo sa kanila<\/em> (whatever they are usually doing.
