(Shutterstock Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; The Philippines and its ASEAN-neighbors&#8211; Malaysia and Indonesia&#8211; have agreed to form a tri-partite technical working group to address the smuggling and dumping of palm oil into the country to the detriment of local coconut farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel &#8220;Manny&#8221; Pi\u00f1ol said the agreement was reached on Thursday following a call by Malaysian and Indonesian government representatives on him.<\/p>\n<p>The DA earlier recommended a temporary ban on palm oil importation from Indonesia and Malaysia, citing figures which indicate dumping of the commodity which led to the collapse of local coconut prices.<\/p>\n<p>Under the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), member-countries could initiate measures to safeguard its farmers affected by the dumping of excess commodities from other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Importation data gathered by the DA showed that exports of palm oil to the Philippines by both Indonesia and Malaysia have increased by 100 percent over the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>Since palm oil is cheaper than coconut oil, the former&#8217;s increase in the commodity exports was cited one of the reasons behind the collapse of copra prices.<\/p>\n<p>During yesterday&#8217;s meeting, Pi\u00f1ol said, it was agreed that the technical working group will draft recommendations on the rationalization of palm oil exports to the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Pi\u00f1ol said he proposed keeping palm oil exports by Malaysia and Indonesia at levels which would not hurt the country&#8217;s coconut and palm oil industry.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on Malaysia and Indonesia to check on reports on the alleged smuggling of crude and refined palm oil to the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Pi\u00f1ol also suggested to the two countries to open up their markets to Philippine products, especially coconut-based products, to correct the trade imbalance.<\/p>\n<p>The technical working group is expected to be organized next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; The Philippines and its ASEAN-neighbors&#8211; Malaysia and Indonesia&#8211; have agreed to form a tri-partite technical working group to address &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":12669,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-207720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","mauthors-lilybeth-ison","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207720","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=207720"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207720\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":207722,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207720\/revisions\/207722"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/12669"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=207720"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=207720"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=207720"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
