(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CanadianForces\/photos\/a.1524483394445524.1073741830.1522633664630497\/1959705604256632\/?type=3&amp;amp;theater\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CanadianForces\/\">Canadian Armed Forces\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OTTAWA \u2013 The federal government is defending its refusal to disclose the contents of a 60-page memo the country&#8217;s top bureaucrat sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about Vice-Admiral Mark Norman.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Friday, the Department of Justice said the memo sent by Michael Wernick, clerk of the Privy Council, to Trudeau last October was completely blacked out by government lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Norman&#8217;s lawyer Marie Henein revealed the memo&#8217;s existence during a pre-trial hearing Thursday, saying the government had withheld its contents because of solicitor-client privilege.<\/p>\n<p>After both Henein and Justice Heather Perkins-McVey noted that Wernick was not a lawyer, the judge agreed to set aside two days in April for Henein to challenge the privilege claim.<\/p>\n<p>In its statement, the Justice Department said the memo was handled the same way as the other documents requested by Norman&#8217;s legal team and blacked out by government lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese redactions were applied by legal counsel,\u201d the Justice Department said, adding that \u201csuch redactions are consistent with the normal process applied to all documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final say on these redactions and relevance of the documents rests with the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friday&#8217;s statement is the latest from the Justice Department about the Norman case, some of which Henein flagged to the court earlier this month as being \u201cinaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suspended as the military&#8217;s second-in-command in January 2017, Norman was charged last year with breach of trust for allegedly leaking government secrets to pressure the newly minted Trudeau government to approve a $700-million shipbuilding contract.<\/p>\n<p>That contract, negotiated by the Harper Conservatives and finalized by Trudeau&#8217;s Liberals in November 2015, involved leasing a converted civilian ship from Davie Shipbuilding in Quebec as a temporary naval supply vessel.<\/p>\n<p>Norman has denied any wrongdoing and his politically charged trial is scheduled to start in August and run through much of the fall federal election.<\/p>\n<p>Norman&#8217;s legal team has been fighting since October for access to thousands of internal government documents they say will prove the suspended military officer&#8217;s innocence and show that the government interfered in his case.<\/p>\n<p>Subpoenas were issued last month for internal communications from senior officials in the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office and the Privy Council Office about the case, including emails, BlackBerry messages and other records.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA \u2013 The federal government is defending its refusal to disclose the contents of a 60-page memo the country&#8217;s top &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":155857,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-207683","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-lee-berthiaume","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207683","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=207683"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207683\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":207684,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/207683\/revisions\/207684"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/155857"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=207683"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=207683"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=207683"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
