{"id":206893,"date":"2019-03-26T03:14:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T07:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=206893"},"modified":"2019-03-26T03:16:17","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T07:16:17","slug":"pinoys-urged-to-elect-pro-education-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2019\/03\/26\/pinoys-urged-to-elect-pro-education-candidates\/","title":{"rendered":"Pinoys urged to elect pro-education candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MANILA<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8212; An education advocacy group on Monday urged education stakeholders to choose leaders who will prioritize education in their legislative agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a need for stakeholders across various sectors of society to be deliberate and coordinated with our efforts to push for reforms in education. However, it is crucial that we choose leaders who are going to advocate for these policies aligned with the Philippine long-term development plan,\u201d Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) executive director Lovelaine Basillote said in policy forum in Makati City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basillote said having such leaders would impact the government\u2019s long-term vision for national development, known as &#8220;AmBisyon Natin 2040.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this platform, the education system must ensure that Filipino graduates acquire relevant competencies and develop values which would guarantee improved and quality life for all Filipinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/55807282_2252609801462811_6254541533479960576_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/55807282_2252609801462811_6254541533479960576_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/55807282_2252609801462811_6254541533479960576_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/55807282_2252609801462811_6254541533479960576_n-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption>Under this platform, the education system must ensure that Filipino graduates acquire relevant competencies and develop values which would guarantee improved and quality life for all Filipinos. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mka_scenestealers\/1255235039\/\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mka_scenestealers\/\">MK A.\/Flickr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nd\/2.0\/\">CC BY-ND 2.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, PBEd chair Ramon del Rosario noted that the Philippines has one of the highest unemployment rates in Asia, and Filipino graduates lack skills demanded by industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased on the latest data from the International Labor Organization, 21.7 percent of youth in the Philippines are not in education, employment or training as of 2017. This goes back to the poor learning that happens in our schools as evidenced by the National Achievement Test,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Del Rosario urged government officials, industry leaders, civil society representatives and members of the academe who attended the forum to work together and have synchronized efforts to promote education reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us disabuse ourselves of the idea that we can go at it alone as our individual efforts are small in comparison to the enormity of what is demanded of us. We\u2019ll be measured ultimately by our collective persistence and our ability to make inroads hand-in-hand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 2006, PBEd is an advocacy group which conducts an annual assessment of the Philippine educational system to ensure it provides quality learning in the context of global economy.
