(Shutterstock photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. &#8212; A judge has dismissed charges against one of the founders of the Indigenous Idle No More protest movement who was accused of living illegally on Saskatchewan park land.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia McAdam and her brother Kurtis were to stand trial for failing to comply with a provincial government order to vacate land in the Zig Zag Bay area near the community of Big River.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown has 30 days to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard that Sylvia McAdam was living on the land for two years before she was ordered to leave early in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>She argued her family had been at Zig Zag Bay for generations and she had a Treaty right to live on the land.<\/p>\n<p>McAdam says the court ruling is a relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family has always lived there,\u201d McAdam said outside court in Prince Albert Wednesday. \u201cFor the province to come and create a park there without our consent, in violation of Treaty 6, is problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyer, Larry Kowalchuk, says the family hopes to work out an agreement with the government for use of the land.<\/p>\n<p>McAdam says she hopes to be able to live back on the property some day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s where I grew up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Idle No More says it was formed in 2012 as a protest against the introduction of a bill by the former Conservative government to change legislation, including the Indian Act, Navigable Waters Protection Act and Environmental Assessment Act.<\/p>\n<p>The group argued that the changes diminished the rights and authority of Indigenous communities while making it easier for governments and businesses to push through projects without strict environmental assessment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. &#8212; A judge has dismissed charges against one of the founders of the Indigenous Idle No More &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":15186,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-206622","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/206622","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=206622"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/206622\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/15186"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=206622"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=206622"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=206622"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
