(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BangkoSentralngPilipinas\/photos\/a.335647726499063.76156.154917097905461\/997366883660474\/?type=1&amp;amp;theater\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BangkoSentralngPilipinas\/\">Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; An economist of ING Bank Manila has forecast that Philippine Monetary officials will keep the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) key rates steady this week.<\/p>\n<p>However, ING Bank Manila senior economist Nicholas Mapa noted that a cut is possible by May to address the impact of last year\u2019s rate hikes on domestic output.<\/p>\n<p>In a report Tuesday, Mapa said the central bank\u2019s policy-making Monetary Board (MB) has the leeway to keep key rates steady during their rate setting meet on Thursday since inflation continues its downward path.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the January 2019 inflation further decelerated to 4.4 percent from 5.1 percent last December primarily due to slower rate of price increases of the heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages index.<\/p>\n<p>Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy items, also slowed down to 4.4 percent from 4.7 percent last December.<\/p>\n<p>Mapa said the slower inflation rate is as expected and noted that \u201cany cost push driven inflation pop tends to dissipate quickly once supply bottlenecks are mitigated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trend will continue in next few months, barring any tightness in food supply or spikes in oil prices,\u201d he said, as he projected inflation to go back to within the 2-4 percent target band by the second quarter of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The economist also cited that slower core inflation \u201cvalidates that the recent spike is not pervasive and supply side in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The country registered elevated inflation rates in 2018, with figures since March rising beyond the government\u2019s 2-4 percent target range until 2020, due to supply constraints on rice and several agricultural products as well as spike in global oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>With inflation rates breaching the government\u2019s target band, Philippine monetary officials hike the central bank\u2019s key rates by a total of 175 basis points to reign inflation expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Mapa said that since inflation rate has slowed down after peaking at 6.7 percent in September and October, BSP officials \u201ccan ease off the brake pedal for a minute to give the economy a break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA possible RRR cut is in the offing, on an off cycle meeting in 1q,\u201c he said.<\/p>\n<p>The BSP cut banks\u2019 reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 200 basis points in 2018 as it shifts towards a more market-based implementation of monetary policy and financial market reform program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicy cuts also a possibility by May as GDP (gross domestic product) will continue to display the knock off effects of aggressive tightening,\u201d Mapa added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; An economist of ING Bank Manila has forecast that Philippine Monetary officials will keep the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":151970,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-201080","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","mauthors-joann-villanueva","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/201080","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=201080"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/201080\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/151970"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=201080"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=201080"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=201080"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
