{"id":201,"date":"2014-01-15T05:35:47","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T13:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/66.147.244.209\/~canadiu3\/?p=201"},"modified":"2014-01-15T06:01:04","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:01:04","slug":"destroy-banned-marijuana-by-mixing-it-with-water-kitty-litter-health-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/01\/15\/destroy-banned-marijuana-by-mixing-it-with-water-kitty-litter-health-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Destroy banned marijuana by mixing it with water, kitty litter: Health Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OTTAWA\u2014Users of medical marijuana will soon be prohibited from growing their own pot\u2014and the federal government is suggesting they turn to their feline friends for help in properly disposing of leftover stashes.<\/p>\n<p>Health Canada recommends blending marijuana with water and mixing it with cat litter before tossing it into regular household trash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary option is to break down the materials, mask the odour and dispose of it in the garbage,\u201d department spokesman Sean Upton said in an emailed response to questions.<\/p>\n<p>Health Canada has announced a complete reworking of the medical marijuana system\u2014in part due to concerns about the risk of criminal infiltration.<\/p>\n<p>Under the existing program, to be phased out by April 1, people like Jason Wilcox of Abbotsford, B.C., are issued licences to grow marijuana for their personal use to help ease the symptoms of painful conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox and thousands of others who cultivate their own pot have until the end of March to render any remaining weed \u201cunfit for use or consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the new system, only licensed producers will grow marijuana for postal distribution to patients whose health-care providers agree it is the appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30,000 people across the country are authorized to use the drug for medical purposes, and many have licences to produce their own strains of marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Internal government briefing notes released under the Access to Information Act say that such users in possession of homegrown plants as of April 1 will be violating the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, \u201cwhich becomes a law enforcement issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The order to destroy leftover pot is \u201cridiculous\u201d and a \u201ctravesty,\u201d said the HIV-positive Wilcox, who is licensed to grow marijuana that helps diminish painful side effects of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just goes to show what the government\u2019s done with this whole program from Day 1,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally believe my rights are being stepped on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox, 40, said he can grow the pot he needs for under $2 a gram, but faces paying as much as $12 a gram under the new system, which he can\u2019t afford.<\/p>\n<p>He is coy about what he will do after March 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to suggest that I\u2019m going to incriminate myself in open media. That would be kind of silly,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m also not going to tell you that I\u2019m going to conform to the law, either. I\u2019m just telling you that I\u2019m in the grey area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox says his current regimen has helped stabilize his health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry a lot for the patients that are a lot worse off, and the patients that don\u2019t know the politics behind this. They don\u2019t even know they have to destroy their medication.
