(<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=73736193\">Photo By Apple Inc. &#8211; [1], Public Domain<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>TORONTO \u2014\u00a0Apple\u00a0Inc. will debut its\u00a0Apple\u00a0News app in Canada early next week, after years of operating in the U.S. and a handful of other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-based tech giant&#8217;s iOS and macOS app, which curates news based on a user&#8217;s interests, will launch with English and French content from publications including CBC, Radio Canada, La Presse, CTV News, the Toronto Star, Hockey News, the Walrus and Global News, but will eventually grow to include stories from other publications.<\/p>\n<p>Publications will keep 100 per cent of the revenue from ads they sell in\u00a0Apple\u00a0News, but will give up a slice of the revenue they make from subscriptions on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>According to a developer page on\u00a0Apple&#8217;s website, publications will keep 70 per cent of revenues in the first year of a new subscription. If that subscriber hangs on past a year, the publication&#8217;s net revenue will increase to 85 per cent of the subscription price. The model will not count free trials and bonus periods.<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u00a0News&#8217; move into Canada comes after\u00a0Apple\u00a0faced criticism in the U.S. for its app&#8217;s potential to cut into the profits of the struggling media industry, which has dealt with declining newspaper ad revenues and subscribers, closures of local papers and layoffs in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Social media and technology companies have also caught flak for widely disseminating online journalism without sharing the cash they earn from it \u2014 primarily through clicks and advertising \u2014 with the content&#8217;s creators.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to discuss the revenue-sharing aspect of their agreements, La Presse declined, saying, \u201cwe do not comment on our strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randy Lennox, President of CTV&#8217;s parent company Bell Media, said in an email that \u201cOne of the key priorities at Bell Media is to deliver our content to audiences wherever they are, and we&#8217;re excited and committed to providing real-time leading news and sports information on\u00a0Apple\u00a0News.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson noted that his organization&#8217;s content has been on the app since 2017 and available to the U.S., Australian and U.K. markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to when\u00a0Apple\u00a0News launches in Canada as this will provide another opportunity to reach more Canadians with our news service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Festinger, a faculty member at the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver, said whether\u00a0Apple\u00a0News is a good or bad idea for a publisher depends in part on their exact compensation and extra terms and conditions that could have been built into agreements.<\/p>\n<p>He figures some publications might have gotten involved with the app primarily for exposure and to ensure they keep up with the digital age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome entities might be joining\u00a0Apple\u00a0News because they want to be everywhere, even if it isn&#8217;t purely profitable,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if it is break even for them, it might be worth it because they might see it as not losing ground.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO \u2014\u00a0Apple\u00a0Inc. will debut its\u00a0Apple\u00a0News app in Canada early next week, after years of operating in the U.S. and a &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":199480,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-199478","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/199478","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=199478"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/199478\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/199480"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=199478"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=199478"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=199478"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
