MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— It would be more realistic to predict the end of the country’s insurgency threat within three years.<\/p>\n

This was emphasized by Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana at the sidelines of the New Year’s Call held at the AFP Commissioned Officer’s Club in Camp Aguinaldo, Tuesday.<\/p>\n

While admitting that the threat posed by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) is now on the wane thanks to the localized peace talks and Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, he said that ending this within a year is not feasible.<\/p>\n

The above-mentioned strategies are responsible for the surrender of NPA regular members and supporters last year, the DND chief added.<\/p>\n

“We cannot do it this year\u00a0dahil napakalaking problema yan<\/em>\u00a0(it is a big problem), if you will recall this insurgency has been going on for the past 50 years and we cannot end it in one year,\u00a0siguro ang<\/em>\u00a0(maybe our) target\u00a0natin ngayon<\/em>\u00a0(now) is the remaining three years of President (Rodrigo) Duterte’s presidency,\u00a0kaya siguro nating gawin yun<\/em>\u00a0(I think we can do that),” he said.<\/p>\n

Also, Lorenzana said that the NPAs are no longer a formidable force as their numbers have been greatly reduced.<\/p>\n

“Hindi naman sila ganung kalakasan dahil ang<\/em>\u00a0number\u00a0nila<\/em>\u00a0(They are not that strong because their number) is about less than 6,000\u00a0lang<\/em>.\u00a0‘Yung<\/em>\u00a0armed,\u00a0may armas<\/em>, so\u00a0mga isang libo na yung sumurender<\/em>\u00a0(About 1,000 armed rebels already surrendered), so\u00a0meron pang<\/em>\u00a0(so the remaining is) 4,000,\u00a0pero ang malaki sa kanila yung<\/em>\u00a0militia,\u00a0yung<\/em>\u00a0underground movement\u00a0nila, yung sumusuporta ba<\/em>\u00a0(Their militia is big. Those who support them). If we reckon, we estimate that there are about 50,000 nationwide NPA militia\u00a0na sumusuporta sa kanila. Yun ang gusto nating kunin din<\/em>\u00a0(who support them. These are what we want to get). Now out of the surrenderees that came to us since last year, out of the 11,000\u00a0na sumurrender<\/em>\u00a0(who surrendered), 1,000\u00a0ang armado dyan<\/em>\u00a0(of that are armed),\u00a0may baril silang dinala<\/em>\u00a0(they have guns), the others (do not have guns) because they are the militia,\u00a0so mas marami yung<\/em>\u00a0militia\u00a0nila kesa yung armado<\/em>\u00a0(they have more militia than armed troops),” he stressed.<\/p>\n
