(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BrUBUtFAUW9\/\">File Photo<\/a>: @aquamanmovie\/Instagram)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LOS ANGELES \u2014 \u201cAquaman\u201d is still the champ at the box office three weeks in, but the high-concept thriller \u201cEscape Room\u201d also drew some substantial crowds in its debut weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Warner Bros. on Sunday says that \u201cAquaman\u201d has added an estimated $30.7 million from over 4,000 North American theatres. That brings its domestic grosses to nearly $260 million. The DC comics film starring Jason Momoa has had a tidal wave of successes internationally too.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide it has made $940.7 million, making it by far the highest grossing film in the modern DC Extended Universe slate (No. 2 is \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $873.6 million).<\/p>\n<p>Even with the slew of holiday releases, from blockbusters to awards darlings, Sony&#8217;s PG-13 rated thriller \u201cEscape Room\u201d managed to sneak into second place in its first weekend in theatres generating an estimated $18 million in ticket sales \u2014 double its production budget.<\/p>\n<p>The film stars Taylor Russell, Deborah Ann Woll and Logan Miller and was directed by Adam Robitel. The nostalgic musical has earned $138.7 million domestically and is competing for four Golden Globe Awards Sunday evening. And the Bollywood film \u201cSimmba,\u201d playing in 292 locations, grossed $1 million, bringing its North American total to $4.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Six days into the new year and coming off of a record 2018, the box office overall is running a little behind (5 per cent) where the totals were last year, when \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d and \u201cJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle\u201d were still printing money. But that could all change when \u201cGlass\u201d opens on Jan. 18. The M. Night Shyamalan film could be a January record-breaker.<\/p>\n<p>Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Comscore.
