BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.\u2014Kevin Williamson says if you think his new CBS series, \u201cStalker,\u201d crosses a line, \u201cchange the channel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He defended the show Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cStalker\u201d stars Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q as a pair of LAPD detectives investigating stalking cases.<\/p>\n

Their work is based on the LAPD\u2019s Threat Management Unit, formed after the 1989 shooting death of actress Rebecca Schaeffer, who was killed by an obsessed fan on her doorstep.<\/p>\n

The idea came about after Williamson himself had an \u201coverzealous fan\u201d that broke into his home.<\/p>\n

Williamson admits he\u2019s \u201csort of ripping our stories from the headlines\u201d but he\u2019s not trying to show \u201cstylized violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStalker\u201d will also focus on McDermott and Q\u2019s character\u2019s personal issues.<\/p>\n

In the pilot, a man burns a woman alive in her car.<\/p>\n

During the press panel, Williamson admitted the episode was especially scary, but joked he wanted the show to get picked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis show is a hot button,\u201d said McDermott. \u201cIt\u2019s a very entertaining show and it\u2019s a scary show. Stalking is scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cViolence is really a byproduct of the story we\u2019re telling,\u201d added Q.<\/p>\n

Williamson argued the show comes at a time when oversharing on social media is commonplace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have too much access to each other and we put ourselves out there in a way … \u2018Here, look at my children,\u2019 \u2018here\u2019s what I had for dinner,\u2019 \u2018here\u2019s the plate of food\u2019 … you\u2019re encouraging the obsessive mind to consume that and consume you.\u201d<\/p>\n
