Razon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">National Museum&#8217;s (NM&#8217;s) Director Jeremy Barns on Friday, December 14, was saddened by the reaction of the Diocese of Borongan\u00a0over the proposal to put one of the Balangiga Bells in the National Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The hot reaction of the Church authorities in Samar, whom we have been working with for\u00a0years to rebuild the church in Guiuan since Typhoon Yolanda, is understandable \u2013 although much too\u00a0 strongly\u00a0 worded\u00a0 as\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 provocative\u00a0 of\u00a0 unnecessary\u00a0 controversy\u00a0 and\u00a0 acrimony,&#8221; Barns said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Catholic Church last Thursday said they &#8220;object and strongly stand against&#8221; Senate Resolution No. 965, asking the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte to \u201cshare\u201d with Filipinos the historic relics by placing one of the bells at the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">[<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/12\/13\/diocese-of-borongan-objects-transfer-of-one-balangiga-bell-to-national-museum\/\">READ: Diocese of Borongan objects transfer of one Balangiga bell to National Museum<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It said added that such move is &#8220;disrespectful mangling of history and the right of the Catholic faithful of Balangiga to their private property&#8221; and that the resolution &#8220;does violence to history and the sacred character and purpose of the Balangiga Bells.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;It\u00a0 was\u00a0 sad\u00a0 to\u00a0 read\u00a0 it,\u00a0 as\u00a0 it\u00a0 does\u00a0 not\u00a0 accurately\u00a0 reflect\u00a0 the\u00a0 good\u00a0 relationships\u00a0 that\u00a0 exist\u00a0 between\u00a0 the\u00a0 government\u00a0 cultural\u00a0 agencies\u00a0 and\u00a0 numerous\u00a0 dioceses\u00a0 and\u00a0 parishes\u00a0 which\u00a0 we\u00a0 have\u00a0 assisted,\u00a0 expending\u00a0 considerable\u00a0 government\u00a0 resources\u00a0 and\u00a0 public\u00a0 funds\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 process,&#8221; the NM&#8217;s official stressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Barns went on and said the museum has no hands on the proposal introduced by Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nevertheless, Barns expressed gratitude to the lawmaker, calling his petition as &#8220;admirable and objectively reasonable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;We are proud that he regards the NM as a public institution so highly as to propose that we host one Balangiga bell for the benefit of access by the people at large in the national capital, and we thank him for his support and confidence,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an interview with reporters earlier, Zubiri found the Church statement &#8220;arrogant,&#8221; noting that he was only asking the government to lend the Balangiga Bell to NM for a while so that more Filipinos will have more knowledge about the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;To borrow <i>lang naman hindi naman ibinibigay<\/i>. Temporary l<i>ang naman &#8216;yan <\/i>(I am only asking if we can borrow and not actually give it. It is only temporary).
