Photo by Brett Weinstein \/ Flickr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NEW YORK\u2014Hillary Rodham Clinton gave Jon Stewart no hints about whether she will run for president, but acknowledged during Tuesday\u2019s taping of \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d that the speculation surrounding her possible candidacy has become \u201ca cottage industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart introduced Clinton by saying, \u201cShe\u2019s here solely for one reason: to publicly and definitively declare her candidacy for president of the United States &#8230; I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That proved not to be true.<\/p>\n<p>The two moved on to a series of national and international issues Clinton faced as secretary of state, including the violence and tension between Israel and the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really in a terrible dilemma,\u201d she said, noting there has been an offer of a cease-fire brokered by Egypt that Israel accepted but that was rejected by Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of what I see Hamas doing is, their identity comes from being the violent resistance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart also plugged Clinton\u2019s new book, \u201cHard Choices\u201d, calling it an \u201ceyewitness view\u201d to her four years as chief U.S. diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>But he kept returning to everyone\u2019s main question: the 2016 presidential race, joking, \u201cI think I speak for everybody when I say, no one cares (about the book), they just want to know if you\u2019re running for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then took a different tack to try to get a hint from her about her political plans, asking whether she prefers an office with corners, or without them\u2014like the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t go for that bait either.<\/p>\n<p>The 66-year-old former first lady is well aware of the spotlight on her as a potential presidential hopeful, with pundits parsing her every word and books and articles attacking her past actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been amazed at what a cottage industry it is, and so, I kind of expect it would continue, so I\u2019m not really paying a lot of attention,\u201d she deadpanned.<\/p>\n<p>However, when asked about her recent statement that her family was \u201cdead broke\u201d when they left the White House, she conceded, \u201cThat was an inartful use of words\u201d\u2014given the tens of millions of dollars she, her husband and their daughter Chelsea reportedly have earned with just their speeches.<\/p>\n<p>The memoir of her time as secretary of state is No. 2 on The New York Times\u2019 nonfiction bestseller list.
