Despite the Palace\u2019s statements to give the Duterte-appointed official \u201cthe benefit of the doubt,\u201d the State University withdrew its recommendation for the reappointment of Regent Farolan to the Board of Regents after his two-year term ended last month. (FIle\u00a0Photo<\/a>: Mar Manigas<\/a>\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>The University of the Philippines (UP) Board of Regents disassociated with Regent Frederick \u201cSpocky\u201d Farolan after his Facebook statements of sarcasm telling his followers to \u201cchoose the three Ateneo players [that they] want [to be] injured for Wednesday\u2019s Game 2\u201d and suggesting a rumble between UP fraternities and Ateneo fraternities, which were posted after Game 1 of the championship series last Saturday, December 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the Palace\u2019s statements to give the Duterte-appointed official \u201cthe benefit of the doubt,\u201d the State University withdrew its recommendation for the reappointment of Regent Farolan to the Board of Regents after his two-year term ended last month. UP President Danilo Concepcion also apologized for any \u201canxiety\u201d that Farolan\u2019s statements may have caused officially stating, \u201cWhatever his motives may have been, there is no excuse for sowing fear and confusion, especially at a time when the University\u2019s attention should have been focused on the rising successes of its athletic program. We view with extreme disapproval and strongly condemn violence in any form.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Concepcion added that, \u201c[The statements] do not in any way represent the values of the University, and the high esteem in which it holds sportsmanship, fair play, and civility in athletics as well as in other aspects of our academic and social life,\u201d and that he is \u201cextremely disappointed\u201d with the regent\u2019s words. <\/span><\/p>\n

Senator Kiko Pangilinan agreed with the school’s decision and even expressed that he believes \u201cRegent Farolan should tender his resignation as member of the UP Board of Regents immediately\u201d because \u201chis views expressed on social media are totally unacceptable and a disgrace to the University of the Philippines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in the midst of UP\u2019s strong distancing from Farolan, the State University\u2019s President for Public Affairs Dr. Jose Dalisay clarified on DZMM Teleradyo that the Board can \u201conly recommend,\u201d but \u201cthe ultimate appointing authority is the President.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In April 2018, Farolan also made headlines after responding on social media to negative comments about UP\u2019s delayed release of College Admission Test results.<\/span><\/p>\n

While both UP and Ateneo communities are awaiting how the situation regarding Farolan will unfold, they are also anticipating Game Two of the best-of-three University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81 finals, where UP will have to do-or-die on Wednesday, December 5.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
