(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/morneau.bill\/photos\/a.665590390169436.1073741828.591266327601843\/1641905152537950\/?type=3&amp;amp;theater\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/morneau.bill\/\">Bill Morneau\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-auto\">\n<p>Canada&#8217;s economy is strong and growing, with more jobs and opportunities for the middle class and people working hard to join it. In the last three years, hard-working Canadians have created more than half a million new full-time jobs, pushing the unemployment rate to its lowest level in the past 40 years. At the same time, consumer confidence is strong and business profits are up\u2014good news for Canadians and the communities they call home.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Finance Minister Bill Morneau spoke with members of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, to highlight Canada&#8217;s economic strengths and discuss the Government&#8217;s recently released\u00a0<i>Fall Economic Statement 2018.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Government proposes to build on this economic strength, with measures in the\u00a0<i>Fall Economic Statement<\/i>\u00a0that will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create the\u00a0<b>British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund<\/b>\u00a0by providing $100\u00a0million over six years starting in 2018\u201319, creating good, middle class jobs in coastal communities. In addition, the Government will make a $5\u00a0million contribution to the Pacific Salmon Foundation in 2018\u201319.<\/li>\n<li>Improve competitiveness by\u00a0<b>allowing the full cost of machinery and equipment used in the manufacturing and processing of goods to be written off immediately<\/b>\u00a0for tax purposes,<b>\u00a0<\/b>and by\u00a0<b>introducing the Accelerated Investment Incentive<\/b>\u00a0to support investment by businesses of all sizes and across all sectors of the economy. These changes will make it more attractive to invest in assets that will help drive business growth and secure jobs for middle class Canadians.<\/li>\n<li>Increase investment in the clean technology sector by\u00a0<b>allowing specified clean energy equipment to be eligible for an immediate write-off of the full cost<\/b>. This will help achieve climate goals, and position Canada to be more globally competitive.<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate support for business innovation by providing a further\u00a0<b>$800\u00a0million over five years to the Strategic Innovation Fund<\/b>, which will support innovative investments across the country and in all economic sectors. Notably, of this amount, $100\u00a0million will focus on providing support to the forest sector.<\/li>\n<li>Make Canada a globally connected economy by\u00a0<b>launching an Export Diversification Strategy<\/b>\u00a0aimed at increasing Canada&#8217;s overseas exports by 50 per cent by 2025.<\/li>\n<li><b>Remove barriers to trade within Canada<\/b>\u00a0by working with provinces and territories to enable businesses to transport goods more easily, to harmonize food regulations and inspections, to align regulations in the construction sector (including the harmonization of building codes across Canada), and to facilitate greater trade in alcohol between provinces and territories.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce measures to make it easier for businesses to grow by\u00a0<b>modernizing federal regulations\u00a0<\/b>and encouraging regulators to consider economic competitiveness when designing and implementing regulations, while continuing to protect Canadians&#8217; health and safety, as well as our environment.<\/li>\n<li>Support innovative solutions to some of Canada&#8217;s big challenges by\u00a0<b>creating a Social Finance Fund<\/b>\u00a0that gives charitable, non-profit and social purpose organizations access to new financing, and connects them with non-government investors.<\/li>\n<li><b>Advance pay equity<\/b>\u00a0by ensuring that women and men in federally regulated sectors receive equal pay for work of equal value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Fall Economic Statement<\/i>\u00a0also announces the Government&#8217;s intention to introduce three measures to\u00a0<b>support Canadian journalism<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Quotes<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Canada&#8217;s economy is strong and growing, but there is still more work to be done.
