(<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=72579710\">File Photo By Tasnim News Agency\/Wikimedia <\/a>commons<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=72579710\">, CC BY 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TEHRAN, Iran \u2014 Iran&#8217;s President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called Israel a \u201ccancerous tumour\u201d established by Western countries to advance their interests in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s leaders frequently condemn Israel and predict its demise, but Rouhani, a relative moderate, rarely employs such rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing an annual Islamic Unity Conference on Saturday, Rouhani said \u201cone of the ominous results of World War II was the formation of a cancerous tumour in the region.\u201d He went on to refer to Israel as a \u201cfake regime\u201d set up by Western countries.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, responded to Rouhani&#8217;s remarks saying \u201cRouhani&#8217;s slander, which calls for the destruction of Israel, proves yet again why the nations of the world need to join in the sanctions against the Iranian terrorist regime which threatens them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran supports militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas that are pledged to Israel&#8217;s destruction. Iran has never threatened to attack Israel, but has vowed to retaliate if it is attacked. Israel views Iran as an existential threat.<\/p>\n<p>Rouhani said the United States cultivates close ties with \u201cregional Muslim nations\u201d to protect Israel, an apparent reference to Iran&#8217;s regional rival Saudi Arabia and the kingdom&#8217;s Sunni Arab allies. He said bowing to American pressure amounts to \u201ctreason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, however, that Iran was prepared to defend Saudi Arabia from \u201cterrorism and superpowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do consider you as a brother,\u201d he said. \u201cWe do consider the people of Mecca and Medina our brothers,\u201d he added, referring to Islam&#8217;s two holiest cities, in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran nearly three years ago after Iranian protesters stormed its diplomatic posts in Iran in response the kingdom&#8217;s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric.
