{"id":190676,"date":"2018-11-23T02:40:22","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T07:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=190676"},"modified":"2018-11-23T02:40:22","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T07:40:22","slug":"chinese-coast-guard-chases-away-reporters-notebook-crew-from-panatag-shoal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/11\/23\/chinese-coast-guard-chases-away-reporters-notebook-crew-from-panatag-shoal\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Coast Guard chases away Reporter&#8217;s Notebook crew from Panatag Shoal"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_190677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190677\" style=\"width: 806px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Reporters-Notebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-190677\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Reporters-Notebook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"806\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Reporters-Notebook.jpg 806w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Reporters-Notebook-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Reporters-Notebook-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-190677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GMA&#8217;s Jun Veneracion talking to members of the Chinese Coast Guard (Screengrab photo from Facebook video of Reporter&#8217;s Notebook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Members of the Chinese Coast Guard did not allow the crew of GMA&#8217;s Reporter&#8217;s Notebook to conduct an interview for a documentary in Panatag Shoal in early November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This incident happened last November 8 and aired on GMA on Thursday night, November 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an article published by GMA, journalist Jun Veneracion said two Chinese speedboats moved towards their direction and &#8220;made a beeline&#8221; as the television crew reached Panatag Shoal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Without the permission of China, you cannot carry out the interview here,&#8221; a member of the Chinese Coast Guard told Veneracion&#8217;s team, stressing that the latter is in &#8220;the sea area of the People&#8217;s Republic of China.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Responding to this, the journalist told the Chinese officer, &#8220;But this is within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Panatag Shoal is a rich fishing ground located within the Philippines\u2019 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and is 124 nautical miles from Zambales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But as Veneracion sensed that his conversation with the Chinese Coast Guard member was &#8220;going nowhere,&#8221; he decided to just leave the area and asked for 30 minutes so he and his crew can pack their things up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;If you don\u2019t leave here, we will make a forced matter,&#8221; the Chinese officer told the Reporter&#8217;s Notebook team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Veneracion answered back, &#8220;You need not\u00a0[to] warn us, sir.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The journalist said that the Chinese Coast Guard &#8220;didn\u2019t leave the area until we were miles away from Panatag Shoal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Veneracion and his team went back to Panatag Shoal a few months after they first travelled there.
