Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada\u2019s immigration policies are giving it a big advantage over the United States when it comes to attracting business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a country that\u2019s open to immigration right now,\u201d he said earlier this week, on the eve of the November 6 U.S. mid-term elections. \u201cBeing able to get the top talent and draw on big pools of well-educated, ambitious, forward-thinking and diverse [people] is a hell of a competitive advantage that I don\u2019t see the U.S. matching anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trudeau made the remarks in an appearance at the Fortune Most Powerful Women International Summit in Montreal, which brought together women\u00a0CEOs, thought leaders, entrepreneurs and senior representatives of the Canadian government.<\/p>\n

Trudeau said Canadians are \u201cpositively inclined<\/a>\u201d toward immigration and said they know from Canada\u2019s experience over generations and centuries that immigrants have \u201ccreated our success.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are able to take in almost one per cent of our population every year in immigration \u2014 a little over 300,000 \u2014 and we\u2019re able to do that because it\u2019s a system that Canadians have confidence in; it\u2019s rules-based, it\u2019s controlled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Last week, Trudeau\u2019s Liberal government unveiled its\u00a0new immigration levels plan<\/a>, which will see admissions of new permanent residents through Canada\u2019s economic, family and refugee \/ humanitarian programs reach nearly one per cent of Canada\u2019s population in 2021.<\/p>\n

Of the 350,000 immigrants that Canada is planning to welcome that year, nearly 60 per cent will arrive through Canada\u2019s economic immigration programs. A majority of economic immigrants are slated to arrive through\u00a0Canada\u2019s Federal High Skilled immigration programs and its Provincial Nominee Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
