NEW DELHI\u2014Actress and dancer Zohra Sehgal, who charmed viewers with her impish grin and twinkling eyes, has died of heart failure in New Delhi at age 102.<\/p>\n

Sehgal had been hospitalized with pneumonia earlier in the week and passed away Thursday evening. She will be cremated later Friday.<\/p>\n

Condolence messages poured in for the performer.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her as \u201cprolific and full of life,\u201d in a message on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a journey and what an immensely loveable costar,\u201d Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted.<\/p>\n

Sehgal started out in the 1930s as a dancer. She performed with a troupe led by Uday Shankar, the pioneer of modern Indian dance. Her travels around the world with the group were unusual for an Indian woman of her generation.<\/p>\n

In the 1940s she joined a theatre group in Mumbai and eventually started acting in films. Even though she performed cameo parts, she always made her presence felt. She was part of Bollywood blockbusters like \u201cHum Dil Chuke Sanam,\u201d or \u201cI Have Given My Heart,\u201d and \u201cKal Ho Naa Ho,\u201d or \u201cWhether Tomorrow Comes or Not.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also acted in films like \u201cBend It Like Beckham,\u201d and \u201cBhajji on the Beach,\u201d made by British-Indian filmmaker Gurinder Chaddha.<\/p>\n

Her last film was the Bollywood saga \u201cSaawariya,\u201d or \u201cBeloved,\u201d in 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
