(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresSpokespersonPH\/photos\/a.397841807217544\/750918231909898\/?type=3&amp;amp;theater\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresSpokespersonPH\/\">Office of the Presidential Spokesperson\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; The possibility of further extending martial law in Mindanao has been discussed when President Rodrigo Duterte recently convened the Executive Committee of the National Security Council (EC-NSC), Malaca\u00f1ang announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking into account the lingering terrorist and communist threats, the EC-NSC committed to put into study the possible lifting or further extension of martial law therein,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo said among the factors initially considered during the EC-NSC meeting was the outlook of the people of Mindanao, an overwhelming majority of whom support martial law \u201cin view of the present situation they are in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the facilitation that martial law extension will bring\u00a0to the Marawi rehabilitation, as well as regaining normalcy in Mindanao, and indispensable constitutional and legal factors have also been considered by the panel.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte put Mindanao under martial in May last year when Islamic State-inspired Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups occupied Marawi City, resulting in nearly five months of heavy fighting that left much of the city in ruins.<\/p>\n<p>Congress granted Duterte\u2019s request for martial law extension in December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo said the recent \u201canarchical activities\u201d of the Communist Party of the Philippines &#8211; New People\u2019s Army &#8211; National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) have also been tackled during the EC-NSC meeting that was chaired by Duterte.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President was unwavering with regard to the issue as a result of the communist group&#8217;s efforts in infiltrating and overthrowing the government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Palace official said the President has directed the Department of Justice to pursue the proscription case against the CPP-NPA-NDF as a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo said Duterte has also directed the justice department to conduct an in-depth investigation on the shooting incident in Sagay that resulted in the death of nine farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chief Executive likewise announced the creation of the National Task Force in order to address the armed conflict occasioned by the local communists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President is very much involved in various matters concerning our country but considers national security as one of the most vital concerns that must always be overseen by the government,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; The possibility of further extending martial law in Mindanao has been discussed when President Rodrigo Duterte recently convened the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":187138,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-188114","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-jelly-musico","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/188114","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=188114"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/188114\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/187138"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=188114"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=188114"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=188114"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
