(PNA Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0An official of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has called on cemetery operators to arrange for more frequent garbage collection during &#8220;Undas\u201d &#8212; All Saints&#8217; Day and All Souls&#8217; Day &#8212; when Filipinos visit the graves of their departed loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want cemeteries to become dumping sites,&#8221; Nolan Francisco, chief of EMB&#8217;s Solid Waste Management Division, said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>More frequent trash pick-ups would prevent the accumulation of wastes in cemeteries, Francisco said, noting that practicing cleanliness in cemeteries is a way of showing respect for the dead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People must refrain from littering by disposing of their waste in appropriate trash bins within the cemeteries,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the EMB had recommended that cemeteries provide trash bins for biodegradable, recyclable, residual, and special wastes.<\/p>\n<p>Biodegradable waste, such as food and garden discards, as well as animal and human waste, can be composted.<\/p>\n<p>The EMB said recyclable wastes like newspaper, corrugated cardboard, office paper, and tin cans can be made into new products.<\/p>\n<p>For disposal in proper facilities are residual wastes, which are neither compostable nor recyclable \u2013 for instance, disposable diapers, worn-out rugs, and hazardous household waste like paint, thinners, and radios.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco also urged cemetery administrators to provide more trash bins in strategic locations in the graveyards, in anticipation of the influx of crowds in cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, he said, the volume of trash in cemeteries was about 20 percent higher than in the previous year&#8217;s &#8220;Undas&#8221; season.<\/p>\n<p>All Saints&#8217; Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls&#8217; Day (Nov. 2) this year are special non-working days nationwide, giving people the opportunity to visit their departed loved ones&#8217; graves.<\/p>\n<p>To help reduce the volume of trash for disposal, Francisco said people who will visit cemeteries can pack their food and drinks in containers they can bring home and reuse.<\/p>\n<p>They can even offer flowers and plants without extra wrappings, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It all boils down to discipline,&#8221; he said, noting that more frequent collection would prevent trash from accumulating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA &#8212;\u00a0An official of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has called on cemetery operators to arrange for more frequent garbage &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":186796,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-186759","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-catherine-teves","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/186759","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=186759"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/186759\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/186796"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=186759"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=186759"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=186759"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
