(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CitizenJakeFilm\/photos\/a.281222225634331\/530743917348826\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Photo<\/a> by Butch Iba\u00f1ez via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CitizenJakeFilm\/\">Citizen Jake\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 19 Filipino films were shown during the 10-day event of Asia\u2019s iconic Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in Korea that happened last October 5, carrying the theme of \u201cCinema as a Response to the Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filipino actors Joel Torre, Christopher de Leon, and Sandy Andolong accompanied director Mike de Leon on the red carpet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torre stated his support of Philippine cinema saying, \u201cTo understand our cinema you need to understand what the Philippines is. We are a very mixed culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director de Leon premiered numerous films as he has been very outspoken on his opinions of the Duterte regime, recently sharing on Facebook that he believes \u201cthe country has hit rock bottom,\u201d stating, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have de facto become a dictatorship again, in everything but name.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most notable De Leon film that made the BIFF playlist, melodrama \u201cCitizen Jake,\u201d premiered on opening day.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award-winning director shared that the film is \u201can indictment of the unchanging nature of Philippine society that is almost irredeemably damaged.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opposing side of de Leon is Duterte supporter Brillante Mendoza, who also appeared at the Busan celebration and is known for taking his work to the well-known Cannes Film Festival. \\<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director Mendoza has recently sparked controversy with his Netflix series on the war on drugs entitled \u201cAmo,\u201d which is a story of a young man who gets involved in the trade of narcotics amidst the Duterte regime. Mendoza stated to journalists during the event that he believes, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinema is addictive. It can change your life. It became clear to us that films have a purpose. They can make a difference.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of Mendoza\u2019s films tackle the Philippines\u2019 history with crime and sex trafficking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BIFF concluded on October 14.
