{"id":185101,"date":"2018-10-11T03:43:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T07:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=185101"},"modified":"2018-10-11T03:43:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T07:43:50","slug":"owner-trucking-company-involved-humboldt-bus-crash-charged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/10\/11\/owner-trucking-company-involved-humboldt-bus-crash-charged\/","title":{"rendered":"Owner of trucking company involved in Humboldt bus crash charged"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_185103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185103\" style=\"width: 647px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/647px-Brian_Mason_2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185103\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/647px-Brian_Mason_2015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"647\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/647px-Brian_Mason_2015.jpg 647w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/647px-Brian_Mason_2015-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason at the 2015 Alberta Premier\/Cabinet swearing-in ceremony (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=40429083\">Photo By Connor Mah &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EDMONTON \u2013 The owner of an Alberta trucking company involved in the fatal Humboldt Broncos bus crash has been charged.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason said Wednesday that Sukhmander Singh of Adesh Deol Trucking faces charges of non-compliance with various federal and provincial safety regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges follow an investigation that was completed by Alberta Transportation into the collision,\u201d Mason said. \u201cThe investigation found multiple instances of non-compliance of various transportation regulatory requirements in a six-month period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen people were killed and 13 were injured in rural Saskatchewan six months ago when their bus was involved in a crash with a semi-truck owned by the Calgary-based company.<\/p>\n<p>Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who was driving the semi unit, was charged earlier this year with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.<\/p>\n<p>Officials with Alberta Transportation said eight charges have now been laid against the trucking company owner.<\/p>\n<p>They include seven federal charges: two counts of failing to maintain logs for drivers hours of service, three counts of failing to monitor the compliance of a driver under safety regulations, and two counts of having more than one daily log for any day. The eighth charge under provincial regulations alleges failure to have or follow a written safety program.<\/p>\n<p>When reached in Calgary, Singh said he didn&#8217;t have any comment.<\/p>\n<p>A department spokesman said a federal Crown lawyer will be handling the prosecution on the charges against the owner.<\/p>\n<p>Singh&#8217;s first court appearance is Nov. 9 in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>The maximum penalty for a federal hours of service failing is $5,000 per offence, while the provincial charge carries a $310 penalty. A court can, however, use discretion to impose a penalty up to $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Transportation said Adesh Deol Trucking remains suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Myles Shumlanski, whose son Nick was injured in the crash, was pleased to hear about the charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a good start,\u201d he said. \u201cSome of the people who did the charging need to look at that, too, because why did it get to that point? It&#8217;s still happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shumlanski said governments across the country need to look at why licences are being handed out so easily.<\/p>\n<p>Mason, citing the Broncos crash as the reason, said the province is making driver training for new commercial truckers and bus drivers mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat incident prompted jurisdictions across\u00a0Canada\u00a0to take a closer look at their safety practices,\u201d he said. \u201cAlberta Transportation was already in the process of considering several improvements to traffic safety in our province.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The province said the training, which will include a standardized curriculum, will be mandatory as of March 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew requirements for trucking companies based in Alberta will enhance safety on the roads right across the continent,\u201d Mason said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the province will eliminate a temporary safety fitness certificate and require all new commercial carriers to prove compliance with transportation safety regulations before they start operating.
