(File <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichaelleJeanF\/status\/1045339875325751296\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichaelleJeanF\">@MichaelleJeanF\/Twitter<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">MONTREAL \u2014 With two weeks to go before la Francophonie names its new leader, former governor general Michaelle Jean is receiving only lukewarm support from Quebec&#8217;s political party leaders as she seeks a second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jean has faced an uphill battle in securing another mandate as she battles questions about her expenses and a sentiment that someone from Africa should succeed her because of the number of countries from that continent in the organization of French-speaking nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In May, her campaign suffered a blow when French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would endorse Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo to succeed Jean as secretary general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But even in her home province of Quebec, Jean has failed to attract much support despite being the only Canadian in the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Coalition Avenir Quebec Leader Francois Legault declined to endorse her earlier this week, telling reporters he would &#8220;reserve his decision&#8221; until later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While Parti Quebecois Jean-Francois Lisee said he would support Jean as the only Quebec candidate, he also had reservations about her candidacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;We&#8217;re in a very particular situation, where, three or four days before the vote, a new premier will be elected and will have to navigate in a very narrow margin of manoeuvre,&#8221; he said this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lisee went as far as to say Jean&#8217;s chances of success are slim and it would likely have been advisable for her to have sought a different post within the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard reiterated his earlier support for Jean despite the controversy over spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He has previously said the concerns about the organization&#8217;s finances &#8220;had been heard&#8221; and that Jean, who was first elected secretary general in 2014, had promised to present a plan to address the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While Ottawa has also expressed its support for Jean, she&#8217;s faced criticism from Conservative and Bloc Quebecois MPs after the emergence of various reports questioning her spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The expenses, which were reported by Quebecor media outlets, include a $500,000 renovation to her rented Paris residence and a $20,000 piano.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The member organizations of la Francophonie will choose its leader at a summit in Armenia on Oct. 11-12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jean, who was born in Haiti, was\u00a0Canada&#8217;s governor general from 2005 to 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL \u2014 With two weeks to go before la Francophonie names its new leader, former governor general Michaelle Jean is &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":183350,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-183345","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-morgan-lowrie","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/183345","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=183345"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/183345\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/183350"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=183345"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=183345"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=183345"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
