{"id":18130,"date":"2014-07-04T20:01:24","date_gmt":"2014-07-04T12:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=18130"},"modified":"2025-01-16T13:48:19","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T18:48:19","slug":"crtc-has-received-more-than-1000-complaints-since-anti-spam-law-took-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/07\/04\/crtc-has-received-more-than-1000-complaints-since-anti-spam-law-took-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"CRTC has received more than 1,000 complaints since anti spam law took effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Page-19-shutterstock_60474874.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18131\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Page-19-shutterstock_60474874.jpg\" alt=\"spam email\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Page-19-shutterstock_60474874.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Page-19-shutterstock_60474874-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TORONTO\u2014More than 1,000 complaints have been filed since the new anti-spam law took effect on Tuesday, says Manon Bombardier, the CRTC\u2019s chief compliance and enforcement officer.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of reports have been submitted daily at <a href=\"http:\/\/fightspam.gc.ca\/\">http:\/\/fightspam.gc.ca<\/a>\u00a0and investigators are already at work looking into whether companies have violated the new law, says Bombardier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have received a number of complaints, and the numbers will keep going up for sure, but really for us the positive message is Canadians are seeing the importance of the legislation and they are reporting (spam) to the CRTC as the mechanism allows them to do,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what we\u2019ve observed in social media the reaction seems to be quite positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal legislation requires that businesses get written or oral consent before they send emails or other digital messages to consumers. Companies must also clearly identify themselves in each message and allow consumers to unsubscribe from digital mailings.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses that violate the law could face financial penalties of up to  million per violation, while individuals could be fined up to  million per infraction.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy bactrim online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellthysoul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/bactrim.html\">https:\/\/www.wellthysoul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/png\/bactrim.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Bombardier cautions that while she expects the law will reduce the amount of spam Canadians receive, it won\u2019t keep their inboxes clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislation is seeking to strike a balance between the privacy of Canadians and the legitimate businesses that need to communicate with Canadians, so there are some exemptions in the rules.
