(John Steel \/ Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TORONTO &#8212; Drake offered his apologies to moviegoers at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, but gave little explanation as to why he bailed on his opening night event in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message that substituted for his original plans to speak in person Thursday night, Drake immediately acknowledged he left some fans high and dry after they paid more than $100 for tickets to the Canadian premiere of \u201cMonsters and Men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I could be there to share this moment,\u201d he said in a brief video introduction for the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately I&#8217;m on tour right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the extent of his reasoning for why he pulled out of the event with only hours notice.<\/p>\n<p>TIFF organizers announced the Toronto-based rapper as a guest a mere two weeks ago, which meant his tour schedule had already been in place for months.<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Drake declined to offer further explanation.<\/p>\n<p>The rapper also thanked \u201cMonsters and Men\u201d director Reinaldo Marcus Green, as well as a company that created merchandise for the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m just very excited and honoured to be part of something that continues a conversation in this day in age,\u201d he said of the film, which follows the aftermath of a police shooting that kills a black man in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The storyline tracks various people affected by the shooting, including someone who captured the incident on his phone, a teenager with a promising baseball career who&#8217;s grappling with the political fallout and a police officer who weighs his values and his loyalty to the force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s an extremely, extremely important moment and an important movie, and I hope you guys love it as much as I do,\u201d Drake said of the film.<\/p>\n<p>The rapper&#8217;s withdrawal from TIFF&#8217;s opening night shifted attention away from the film&#8217;s timely political themes and towards his unexpected absence.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the second time in the past month Drake has cancelled on Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>In August, he pulled out of his first tour date in the city \u201cdue to scheduling commitments\u201d and has yet to announce a new date for ticket holders.<\/p>\n<p>Drake&#8217;s website listed Thursday as a night off for the rapper, after a show in Montreal on Wednesday and ahead of a concert in Boston on Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO &#8212; Drake offered his apologies to moviegoers at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, but gave little explanation &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":37705,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,106],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-180385","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","category-hollywood","mauthors-david-friend","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180385","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=180385"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/180385\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/37705"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=180385"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=180385"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=180385"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
