(File <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/janepaulinephilpott\/photos\/a.153480698156353.1073741825.153479671489789\/153488611488895\/?type=1&amp;amp;theater\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/janepaulinephilpott\">Jane Philpott\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"textimage-text\">\n<p>On a trip to Quebec, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services, took the opportunity to visit the Algonquin communities of\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Lac Simon<\/span>\u00a0and Kitcisakik, before travelling to Wemotaci in Quebec\u2019s upper St. Maurice Valley.<\/p>\n<p>During her visit to the\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Lac Simon<\/span>\u00a0community, the Minister was warmly received, notably by Chief\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">J\u00e9r\u00f4me<\/span>, the Council of the Anishnabe Nation of\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Lac Simon<\/span>\u00a0as well as the many young people who came to meet her.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Philpott also visited the community of Kitcisakik to meet with Chief P\u00e9nosway and council. They discussed a number of social issues, including housing \u200eand infrastructure needs in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very fortunate to be able to meet with such welcoming people and to experience the vitality and resilience of these communities. The band councils here are dedicated to their members. They propose innovative projects and work hard to find solutions to their challenges to improve their social well being. I remain committed to working with and supporting them in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister Philpott also stopped in\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Val-d\u2019Or<\/span>, where she travelled to the Indigenous friendship centre to meet various local stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Following her stay in\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Abitibi<\/span>, the Minister travelled to the Atikamekw community of Wemotaci, northwest of\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">La Tuque<\/span>, to discuss priority files with Chief N\u00e9ashit and the band council, including the issue of housing, training and connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community\u2019s youth gave me a warm welcome. I continue to believe that we must do whatever is necessary to support these growing and hopeful young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne<\/span>, was also in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very happy that we spent the day in\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">La Tuque<\/span>\u00a0and Wemotaci. We were moved by the reception the Wemotaci high school students gave us while sharing their ambitions. For them, and for future generations, we must continue to work together to improve the living conditions of Indigenous people and to find sustainable and culturally adapted solutions to the challenge they face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Minister had interactions with Indigenous organizations such as<span lang=\"fr\">\u00a0le Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw<\/span>\u00a0and the Indigenous Friendship Centre in\u00a0<span lang=\"fr\">Tuque<\/span>\u00a0that offer services to the region\u2019s Indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p>The trip wrapped up with meetings in Montreal between Minister Philpott and First Nations representatives to discuss First Nations issues and the transformation of Indigenous Services Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Quick facts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Wemotaci community is located on the north shore of the\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">St. Maurice<\/span>\u00a0River, 100 kilometres northwest of\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">La Tuque<\/span>. On December 31, 2017, 1,474 members of the Atikamekw Nation of Wemotaci resided in and 495 resided outside the community.<\/li>\n<li>The Anishnabe Nation of\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Lac Simon<\/span>\u00a0is located on the west side of\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Lac Simon<\/span>, 32 kilometres south-east of\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Val-d\u2019Or<\/span>, in\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue<\/span>, Quebec.
