{"id":176403,"date":"2018-08-13T02:06:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T06:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=176403"},"modified":"2018-08-13T02:06:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T06:06:25","slug":"balangiga-bells-return-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/08\/13\/balangiga-bells-return-philippines\/","title":{"rendered":"Balangiga bells to return to\u00a0Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Balangiga Bells will soon be transferred back to the Philippines as the United States (US) has expressed its intention to return them.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on August 11,\u00a0<span>Saturday<\/span>, the US embassy in Manila said that: \u201cSecretary of Defense (James) Mattis has notified Congress that the Department intends to return the Bells of Balangiga to the Philippines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These significant bells are three church bells from Balangiga Church in Eastern Samar which were reportedly taken by the US army as war booty during the Balangiga Massacre.<\/p>\n<p>At present, one of the church bells is at the American&#8217;s military base in South Korea, while the other two is at F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>The US embassy said that they have received assurances that &#8220;the Bells will be returned to the Catholic Church and treated with the respect and honor they deserve&#8221; adding that the bells are significant to both Filipinos and Americans.<\/p>\n<p>However, the embassy said that there is no specific date yet for the return of these bells.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Malaca\u00f1ang on August 12,\u00a0<span>Sunday<\/span>\u00a0welcomed this plan of US.
