{"id":175871,"date":"2018-08-09T04:49:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T08:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=175871"},"modified":"2018-08-09T04:49:56","modified_gmt":"2018-08-09T08:49:56","slug":"former-immigration-chief-dies-75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/08\/09\/former-immigration-chief-dies-75\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Immigration chief dies at 75"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DAGUPAN CITY &#8212;\u00a0<\/strong>Former Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr. died Thursday morning after more than a year of battle against cancer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adn ads\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":14z\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":150\" class=\"a3s aXjCH m1651d79e73bc580d\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cHe returned to our Lord at 3 a.m. while in a hospital in Manila,\u201d his son Alvin Fernandez said in a radio interview.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Alvin said his father was diagnosed with stage-four cancer on June 2017.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cHe had been in and out of the hospital few months before his death. He had not been eating well and he had an oxygen tank with him 24 hours a day because he had difficulty in breathing,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Fernandez served as mayor of Dagupan City between 1992 and 2010; Undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government from 2009 to 2011; and Commissioner of Immigration from 2004 to 2007.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cHe asked us (his family) to continue to love one another and for us to write on his obituary how much he loved Dagupan City,\u201d Alvin said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Many netizens also expressed their grief with the passing of Fernandez, who was known as the \u201cfather of Dagupan City\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe will surely miss you Mayor Al. Salamat sa lahat ng tulong. Salamat sa pagmamahal. Naglulukha ang buong lungsod ng Dagupan. (Thank you for all your help. Thank you for your love. The entire Dagupan City mourns for your death),\u201d posted Rhoderick Dawis of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) San Fernando City, La Union. Dawis was formerly from DILG Dagupan City.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Glenn Munoz Lopez of the Junior Chamber International also posted: \u201cA very sad day for the City of Dagupan.
