(PNA photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; The Philippine National Police (PNP) will deploy more police personnel and intensify patrols in areas near churches if warranted by the situation.<\/p>\n<p>PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde made the remark following the incident, where an armed man tried to enter the Archbishop&#8217;s Palace in Cebu Tuesday, noting that church officials have yet to request additional security from them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>(U)na wala naman silang<\/em>\u00a0request\u00a0<em>sa atin.<\/em>\u00a0(First, they do not have any request for that.) But then again,<em>\u00a0kung kinakailangan bigyan<\/em>\u00a0(if it is needed) and if we see<em>\u00a0na merong<\/em>\u00a0threat\u00a0<em>doon sa mga kaparian doon sa loob<\/em>\u00a0(that there is threat on the members of the clergy there), then we will provide additional security or intensify patrols (in the) vicinity\u00a0<em>ng mga<\/em>\u00a0(of the) churches\u00a0<em>or kung saan sila nakatira<\/em>\u00a0(or their places of residence),&#8221; Albayalde told newsmen in a chance interview.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Ca\u00f1edo, 41, was reportedly looking for Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, who was at the 117th Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in Manila.<\/p>\n<p>Church security personnel called police to apprehend the man who had run away as they tried to stop him from entering the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Responding policemen shot to death the man, who opened fire on them when asked to raise his hands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Wala pang<\/em>\u00a0(known motive).
