Authorities said the gunman entered the Capital Gazette in Annapolis and \u201clooked for his victims.\u201d The employees killed were Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters, police said.<\/p>\n<p>GERALD FISCHMAN<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Fischman, the editorial page editor at the Capital Gazette, was an \u201cold-fashioned journalist,\u201d a former editor of the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Gunn remembered Fischman as \u201cthe master of AP style\u201d who \u201cmade sure everything was just right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was famous for working long days and being very precise in his language and always making sure the editorial page reflected the heart of the newspaper,\u201d Gunn said in an interview with The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Fischman had worked at the paper 26 years,<\/p>\n<p>ROB HIAASEN<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Rob Hiaasen&#8217;s family is \u201cdevastated\u201d by his death, said his brother, author Carl Hiaasen.<\/p>\n<p>Carl Hiaasen, a prolific novelist and a longtime columnist for the Miami Herald, confirmed that his brother, also a columnist and an editor, was one of the Annapolis victims.<\/p>\n<p>In a brief phone call with The Associated Press, Carl Hiaasen said his family \u201cwas devastated beyond words\u201d by the senseless killing of his brother at The Capital Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the most remarkable person. So gifted and talented and dedicated to journalism,\u201d he said, his voice choked with emotion.<\/p>\n<p>Saying he was too wracked with grief to speak further, Hiaasen referred an AP reporter to something he had just posted to his Facebook page, describing Rob as one of the most \u201cgentle and funny people I&#8217;ve ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gunn, the former Capital Gazette editor, said Rob Hiaasen was a \u201cgifted editor who had an aura of an artist around him who made people want to make journalism a beautiful craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JOHN McNAMARA<\/p>\n<p>John McNamara was a longtime staff writer at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>Gunn said McNamara was workmanlike -\u201dclassic come to work and tell me what I need to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>REBECCA SMITH<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Smith was a sales assistant at the Capital Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>WENDI WINTERS<\/p>\n<p>Special publications editor Wendi Winters was \u201cthe heart of the newspaper,\u201d Gunn said.<\/p>\n<p>Winters was passionate about serving the community and a role model for younger journalist, he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was in many ways the best part of the newspaper in that she cared so much about the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four journalists and a sales assistant were killed Thursday in a shooting at a\u00a0Maryland\u00a0newspaper.
