{"id":166780,"date":"2018-06-11T06:30:10","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T10:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=166780"},"modified":"2018-06-11T06:30:10","modified_gmt":"2018-06-11T10:30:10","slug":"ncca-to-present-dangal-ng-haraya-award-to-whang-od","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/06\/11\/ncca-to-present-dangal-ng-haraya-award-to-whang-od\/","title":{"rendered":"NCCA to present Dangal ng Haraya award to Whang-Od"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_154678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154678\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Whang-od_tattooing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154678\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Whang-od_tattooing.jpg\" alt=\"Whang-od tattooing on June 30, 2016 (Photo By Mawg64 - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0)\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Whang-od_tattooing.jpg 640w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Whang-od_tattooing-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-154678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Recognizing Whang-Od&#8217;s contribution through her practice o the ancient hand-tapped tattooing, the NCCA board headed by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario is set to award her at the Kalinga Capitol Plaza (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=50374688\">Photo By Mawg64 &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is set to present Kalinga\u2019s last and oldest <em>mambabatok<\/em> (traditional tattooist) Maria \u201cWhang-Od\u201d Oggay as a recipient of the <em>Dangal ng Haraya<\/em> award for Intangible Cultural Heritage on June 25.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing Whang-Od\u2019s contribution through her practice of the ancient hand-tapped tattooing, the NCCA board headed by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario is set to award her at the Kalinga Capitol Plaza, Tabuk, Kalinga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApo Whang-Od\u2019s continuing work as a <em>manwhatok<\/em> and her influence on the Filipino traditional arts scene leading to a heightened awareness about the culture of the Kalinga community \u2013 their worldview, traditions, and expressions \u2013 earned her the Dangal ng Haraya for Intangible Cultural Heritage,\u201d the NCCA wrote in a special resolution on May 2 in Davao City.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving this recognition will include the 101-year old traditional tattooist to previous cultural advocates like Senator Edgardo Angara, Architect Augusto Villalon, and Susan Calo Medina, as well as current cultural supporters Senator Loren Legarda and Dr. Jesus Peralta.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Dangal ng Haraya<\/em>, according to the NCCA is \u201cgiven to living Filipino artists, cultural workers, and historians; artistic or cultural groups, historical societies, institutions, foundations, and councils to recognize their outstanding achievements in relevant fields that have made an impact and significant contribution to Philippine culture and arts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Along with the <em>Gawad Alab ng Haraya <\/em>that\u00a0honors outstanding achievements in the performing arts, cultural conservation, arts management, library and information services program, theater production, cultural journalism and documentation, and other fields., through these awards, the Commission seeks to uphold excellence in all artistic and cultural endeavors.
